As a Lead Architect focused on the integration of solutions within Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, you will create innovative approaches that leverage UpToDate's extensive clinical decision support expertise in healthcare workflows.

You will collaborate with diverse teams, including medical editors, informaticists, software developers, implementation specialists, and external partners. Your extensive background in developing and integrating Clinical Decision Support (CDS) functionalities into hospital EHRs will be crucial. You will report to an Associate Director in Product Software Engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

Architectural Design:

Formulate solutions that meticulously address scalability, performance, resilience, availability, maintainability, security, deployment, testing, and monitoring requirements.


Technical Leadership:
Offer technical direction and support for the development and implementation of integrated solutions. Empower development teams to align with overarching architectural designs and establish best practices.

Solution Development:
Partner with engineers to design and execute CDS applications.

Software Testing:
Collaborate with software testing engineers to create comprehensive and detailed testing coverage.

Partner Collaboration:
Engage with teams to understand their needs and challenges, serving as the subject matter expert in your domain.

Innovation and Research:
Keep abreast of the latest developments in CDS and EHR integration, identifying avenues for innovation and enhancement. Assess, evaluate, and propose technologies, tools, and frameworks that expedite the delivery of the product roadmap. Design and execute proof-of-concept (POC) initiatives to inform technology choices. Balance initial planning with the encouragement of modern designs while executing projects in an Agile framework.

Documentation:
Ensure thorough documentation of architecture, design decisions, and processes to facilitate knowledge sharing and continuity.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Over 10 years of development experience, including a minimum of 3 years at a Principal Engineer or Architect level.

Proficient in FHIR, SMART on FHIR applications, and integrations with Epic EHR. Familiarity with handling structured and unstructured data.

Knowledge of CDS Hooks standard, Clinical Query Language (CQL), Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG), or similar frameworks.

Experience with agile engineering methodologies (Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery, SOLID principles, Refactoring, etc.).

Understanding of software development best practices, patterns, and principles.

Experience in Application Program Interface (API) specification and development, including REST services.

Proficient in Java, SpringBoot, JavaScript, RESTful APIs, and databases.

Experience in building and deploying solutions utilizing Microservices Architectures (MSA).

Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools.

Experience working within distributed teams.

Proven ability to deliver complex engineering projects on time and within budget.


Assess the short and long-term implications of technical decisions concerning SDLC best practices, user functionality, application performance, and potential technical debt accumulation.

Experience with cloud platforms such as Amazon AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure is advantageous.
