POSITION SUMMARY
This role is essential for executing welding, flame cutting, and related tasks necessary for the maintenance and repair of dredging equipment. The welder is responsible for conducting all welding operations in a safe manner, ensuring compliance with company protocols.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct welding, flame cutting, and related activities to repair dredge components.
- Adhere strictly to permit-to-work and energy isolation protocols, including fire watch requirements.
- Submit daily counts of oxygen and acetylene bottles to management.
- Ensure all welding operations comply with company policies, class requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of consumables to support repair and fabrication tasks.
- Collaborate with the Chief Engineer and other department heads to align welding tasks with operational needs.
- Inspect welded joints for quality, penetration, and adherence to specifications.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance on welding equipment.
- Store oxygen and acetylene bottles according to company guidelines.
- Assist with non-welding duties as needed.
- Follow approved dredge operating procedures at all times and report unsafe practices to supervisors.
- Maintain cleanliness in assigned work areas.
- Utilize safety and environmental tools effectively, ensuring a tidy job site and securing tools and equipment daily.
- Participate in safety and environmental initiatives to ensure compliance with regulations and enhance company programs.
- This position may require extended travel to remote project sites.
QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of six months to one year of relevant experience or training, or a combination of education and experience that provides the necessary welding skills and knowledge.
The ideal candidate should possess:
- 1-3 years of experience in structural welding and the ability to pass a weld test at a designated facility.
- Knowledge of welding practices and materials, demonstrating proficiency in the craft.
- Familiarity with various types of marine equipment and devices.
- Effective communication skills with peers and supervisors.
- Competencies in stress management, teamwork, and results orientation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The individual must be capable of performing essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. This includes the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, life vests, respirators, ear plugs, and steel-toed shoes.
Additionally, the employee must be able to:
- Move across job sites, which may involve varying heights and access challenges.
- Engage in repetitive movements and maintain physical stamina for extended periods.
- Lift and carry up to 30 lbs independently; for weights exceeding 30 lbs, mechanical assistance is required.
- Push and pull with a peak force of 150 lbs.
- Climb stairs and vertical ladders of 6 ft or more.
- Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
- Adapt to varying temperature conditions and prolonged exposure to environmental factors.
