Position Overview

The Oncology Infusion Therapy Registered Nurse operates under the supervision of the Infusion Therapy Manager or another appointed leader. This role requires a comprehensive understanding, proficiency, and clinical skill set in oncology infusion therapy, including the administration of hazardous drug therapies for both malignant and nonmalignant conditions.

The RN will routinely administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, antineoplastic agents, hazardous medications, and targeted therapies. This position is primarily based in an outpatient infusion center, although other settings may be involved.

This professional is accountable for delivering safe patient care while being cognizant of age-specific and culturally sensitive needs. The Oncology Infusion Therapy Registered Nurse addresses the biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and educational requirements of patients and their families, ensuring effective care delivery in complex scenarios. Additionally, this RN serves as a clinical resource for nursing staff, operational leaders, and medical personnel.

All RNs are expected to be licensed, knowledgeable, and adhere to the nursing practices outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, implementing the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards established by the American Nurses Association. As a vital member of the patient services team, the individual is expected to uphold the voice of the patient while adhering to system policies and procedures and supporting service excellence objectives.

Minimum Educational Requirements

  • Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Licenses and Certifications Required

All certifications must be obtained upon hire unless specified otherwise.
  • Registered Nurse (Single State) or RN - Multi-state Compact
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Additional Licenses and Certifications Preferred

  • Chemotherapy Competency through an approved provider (Oncology Nursing Society or WellStar Oncology Nursing Readiness and Safety)
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) Preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing practice in direct patient care required
  • Minimum of 2 years of outpatient oncology nursing experience preferred
  • Chemotherapy competency

Essential Skills

  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills along with customer service aptitude.
  • Coordination of patient care activities across departments.
  • Delegation skills as permitted by the Georgia Registered Professional Nurse Practice Act and Wellstar policy.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Capability to perform in high-stress and emergency situations.
  • Detail-oriented approach to patient care and nursing skills.
  • Time management skills are essential.
  • Proficient computer skills, including typing, scanning, and general device usage.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and operates within the guidelines of the Georgia Registered Professional Nurse Practice Act.
  • Ability to be trained in handling Hazardous Drugs according to USP guidelines.
