Position Overview

This role operates under the guidance of a Registered Nurse.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is responsible for assisting with various personal care activities and specific treatments for patients, following the directives of the Registered Nurse (RN) in accordance with established protocols and standards.

It is important to note that the Patient Care Technician does not engage in activities that are classified as nursing practices as per the Nurse Practice Act.

In particular, the Patient Care Technician is not authorized to administer medications, take orders from physicians, or perform procedures that necessitate the expertise of a licensed nurse (such as sterile techniques).

Key Responsibilities

(20%) Assess patient care requirements and safety needs as directed by the RN, while recognizing the unique needs of adolescent, adult, and elderly patients.

(20%) Strategically plan and prioritize tasks to ensure timely completion of job responsibilities, including patient care needs as instructed by the RN.

(20%) Execute actions that enhance and support nursing care.

(20%) Review the effectiveness of care provided to guarantee high-quality service and timely completion of patient-related tasks.

(20%) Self-Management: Takes accountability for responsibilities associated with the role, demonstrates strong communication skills, and fosters positive interpersonal relationships. Engages in personal development and assists in the growth of fellow staff members.

Additional Duties:

Utilizes equipment as specified in orientation checklists, policies, and procedures. Participates in training sessions and competency evaluations relevant to the role.

Completes job functions outlined in the orientation checklist as they pertain to the position.

Engages in Performance Improvement initiatives as mandated by the Health System and job description.

Certifications and Licensures

Required Credentials:

BLS: Basic Life Support

Equivalent Experience: Must be obtained within one month of hire or transfer.

PCT - MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification

Required Equivalent Experience:
1) New hires after a specified date must possess a current CNA certification and maintain it actively, or hold an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a valid State of Michigan registry document as a certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or complete an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification leading to licensure in Michigan, or finish an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse Program leading to licensure in Michigan, or successfully complete one semester of nursing clinical education from an accredited Registered Nurse Program or Medical Assistant with the following: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or equivalent Medical Assistant Credential such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), etc.
2) Current Care Assistants as of a specified date without a current CNA will be exempt from obtaining certification as long as they remain in their current role.
3) Current Care Assistants as of a specified date with an active CNA must maintain their certification while in their current role.
4) Internal transfers after a specified date must obtain the CNA certification or complete the internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification within six months of their transfer date. Once certification is obtained, it must be kept active while employed in either classification.

Education Requirements

Education: HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA

Experience, Training, and Skills:

Successful completion of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training is recommended.

Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care provided.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Exposure to high-stress situations, including public interactions, trauma, grief, and death.

Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or suitable alternatives as required.


Ability to move freely throughout the facility with or without assistive devices and perform the functions outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing capabilities are necessary, with or without assistive devices.

Frequent sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods may be required, along with frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.

Some exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials. Compliance with MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements is mandatory.


Ability to manage multiple tasks, collaborate with others, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and remain alert.

Overall dexterity is essential, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling. Repetition of these movements may occur regularly.

Physical Demand Level:
Medium. Must be capable of occasionally lifting or carrying 21-50 lbs., frequently lifting 20 lbs., and consistently managing 10 lbs. throughout the workday.
