Healthcare Support Specialist

This role operates under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN).
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is responsible for assisting with daily living activities and certain treatment procedures for patients, following the directives of the RN in accordance with established protocols and guidelines.
It is important to note that the Patient Care Technician will not engage in any activities classified as nursing practice as per the Nurse Practice Act.
Specifically, the Patient Care Technician is prohibited from administering medications, taking physician orders, or performing any procedures that require the expertise of a licensed nurse, particularly those involving sterile techniques.
Key Responsibilities(20%) Assess and identify patient care needs and safety requirements as directed by the RN, recognizing the unique needs of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
(20%) Strategically plan and prioritize tasks to ensure the completion of essential job functions and patient care needs as instructed by the RN.
(20%) Implement supportive actions that enhance nursing care.
(20%) Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of care provided, ensuring timely completion of patient-related tasks.
(20%) Self-Management: Maintain accountability for responsibilities associated with the role, demonstrating effective communication and interpersonal skills. Take initiative for personal development and assist in the growth of fellow staff members.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Operate equipment as specified in orientation checklists and adhere to policy and procedures. Participate in training sessions and competency evaluations related to role expectations.
Perform job functions outlined in the orientation checklist as they pertain to the role.
Engage in Performance Improvement initiatives as mandated by the Health System and job description.
Certifications and Licensures
Required Credentials:
BLS:
Basic Life Support certification.
Equivalent Experience: Must be obtained within one month of hire or transfer.
Qualification Source: AHA.
PCT - MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification
Required Equivalent Experience:
1) New hires after a specified date must possess a current CNA certification and maintain its active status, or hold an internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification, or have a current State of Michigan registry document as a certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or complete an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification leading to licensure in Michigan, or finish an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse Program leading to licensure in Michigan, or successfully complete one semester of nursing clinical education from an accredited Registered Nurse Program or Medical Assistant with relevant certifications.
2) Current Care Assistants as of a specified date without a current CNA will be exempt from certification requirements as long as they remain in their current role.
3) Current Care Assistants with an active CNA must maintain their certification while in their current classification.
4) Internal transfers after a specified date must obtain CNA certification or complete the internal MyMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification within six months of their transfer date and maintain active certification thereafter.
Required Education
Education: HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA
Experience, Training, and Skills:
Successful completion of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training is recommended.
Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care provided.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Exposure to stressful situations, including public interactions, trauma, grief, and death.
Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as required for the position.
Ability to move freely throughout the facility with or without assistance and perform the functions of the job as described.
Overall vision and hearing capabilities are necessary, with or without assistive devices. Frequent sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods are required, along with the ability to perform various postural changes.Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials. Compliance with MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing requirements is mandatory.
Must be capable of managing multiple tasks, collaborating with others, working independently, maintaining regular attendance, and remaining alert.
Overall dexterity is essential, including handling, reaching, grasping, and feeling, with frequent repetition of these movements.Physical Demand Level:
Medium. Must be able to occasionally lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently lift 20 lbs., and perform various physical activities throughout the workday.
