Job Title: Theater Lighting and Sound Specialist
FSLA: Non-Exempt
Job Status: Part-time
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Theater Director
Role Summary: A Theater Lighting and Sound Specialist is tasked with the design, setup, maintenance, and operation of lighting and sound systems for theatrical performances. This position demands technical proficiency, innovative problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with the producer, director, and other production personnel to ensure that the visual and auditory components of a show enhance the overall experience.
Key Responsibilities: Lighting Specialist
- Design and Programming:
- Develop lighting designs and cues that align with the artistic direction of the production.
- Program lighting consoles and automated lighting technologies.
- Conduct lighting rehearsals and implement adjustments based on feedback.
- Setup and Maintenance:
- Install, rig, and focus lighting fixtures.
- Ensure all lighting apparatus is operational and perform routine maintenance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues that arise during rehearsals and performances.
- Operation:
- Manage lighting boards and consoles during performances.
- Adhere to cue sheets and collaborate with the stage manager to execute lighting transitions seamlessly.
- Mentor and oversee high school students involved in the Lighting Crew.
- Design and Programming:
- Create sound designs and system layouts that enhance the production.
- Program soundboards and digital audio workstations (DAWs) for the playback of sound effects, music, and other audio elements.
- Setup and Maintenance:
- Install and configure sound equipment, including microphones, speakers, and mixing consoles.
- Conduct sound checks and adjust levels to ensure clarity and balance.
- Maintain and troubleshoot audio equipment to prevent technical issues during performances.
- Operation:
- Mix live audio during performances, ensuring optimal sound quality.
- Execute sound cues and manage audio transitions smoothly.
- Monitor audio levels and make real-time adjustments as necessary.
- Mentor and oversee high school students involved in the Sound Crew.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or administrator.
- Education and Experience:
- A Bachelor's degree in Technical Theatre, Audio Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Prior experience in theatrical lighting and sound design/operation, ideally in a professional or educational environment.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with lighting consoles (e.g., ETC, MA Lighting) and soundboards (e.g., Yamaha, DiGiCo).
- Familiarity with DMX, MIDI, and other lighting and audio control protocols.
- Experience with sound reinforcement systems and acoustics.
- Personal Attributes:

- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Background Clearances: Clearances will be required before the start date. Information will be provided during the interview process.
- Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014.
Working Conditions
- Schedule:
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the production schedule.
- Ability to work extended hours, particularly during technical rehearsals and previews.
- Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment.
- Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
