Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Instrument Shop Manager to lead the daily operations of the Joint Engineering and Physics Instrument Shop (JEPIS). As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for overseeing the shop's activities, supervising staff, and maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily operations of JEPIS, including supervision of current Instrument Makers/Machinists
  • Maintain a safe and efficient work environment, ordering and maintaining stock, and keeping the shop floor organized
  • Teach students basic machining skills in a safe and supportive environment
  • Collaborate with a broad cross-section of the university community, including students, faculty, and staff
  • Determine and implement short-term and long-term requirements for JEPIS
Requirements
  • A minimum of ten years' experience as a machinist or equivalent training
  • Class A toolmaker certification
  • Experience in assigning and following jobs to other machinists
  • Experience in the use of CNC equipment and software required for such instruments
  • Supervisory experience, operating an efficient, organized, and safe work environment
  • Experience estimating time required to do a job and quoting prices
  • Extensive training in soldering, welding, benchwork, blueprint reading, and CAD drawing and design
  • Full knowledge of machining procedures and proper safe set-ups
  • Personnel skills to supervise and train other machinists and students
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Some experience as a shop administrator is highly desirable
