EHS Specialist Job Description

The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist will be responsible for implementing and maintaining the plant's environmental management system, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, and promoting pollution prevention and waste reduction. This role will also focus on reducing work-related injuries by continuously improving the safety management system and leading cultural change through exceptional leadership and employee engagement.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate the safety management system for its effectiveness and develop continuous improvement plans to enhance performance.
  • Engage the entire workforce to drive cultural change and achieve safety performance objectives and targets.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and JCI corporate safety systems, serving as the lead contact with regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct incident investigations using a formal process to identify root causes, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
  • Provide effective training for all safety programs, including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, fall protection, and hazard communication.
  • Develop and implement motivational and incentive programs to promote a high degree of safety awareness and enthusiasm.
  • Establish, record, and track safety performance metrics, including leading and lagging indicators.
  • Implement behavior-based observation programs and track their effectiveness.
  • Review planned changes and new equipment installations prior to receipt, approving or recommending modifications as necessary.
  • Train new employees on plant safety rules and guidelines, working with management to provide a safe work environment.
  • Assist in managing workers' compensation and reducing costs by working with insurance carriers, JCI workers' compensation manager, attorneys, and state authorities.
  • Help implement the corporate Environmental Health Safety Information System, collecting safety data to identify root causes of compliance problems and implementing proactive corrective actions.
  • Assist with the administration, implementation, and compliance with the ISO 14001 and 45001 EHS Management System, serving as the plant management representative.
  • Present safety and environmental training programs to workers and supervisors, developing site-specific training materials as needed.
  • Drive Safety Performance throughout the plant.
Educational and Work Experience Requirements:
  • Degree in Industrial or Occupational Health and Safety required.
  • ASP, CSP, or COSHO preferred.
  • 3-5 years of working experience in a manufacturing environment.
