Job Overview

The Supplier Development Engineer (SDE) role is integral to the Global Supply Chain team, serving as a vital technical expert in enhancing supplier capabilities and sourcing new suppliers.

Utilizing advanced knowledge of manufacturing technologies in Mechanical commodities, including sheet metal, machining, and assembly, the expectation is to assist the Sanmina Components Division in delivering innovative solutions tailored to customer needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Global Supply Chain team to identify and prioritize supplier development requirements by commodity to enhance cost efficiency and alleviate supply challenges.
  • Investigate external market trends and entrepreneurial firms to discover potential suppliers.
  • Lead supplier selection through comprehensive qualification processes and manage the integration of suppliers within the internal framework.
  • Leverage technical expertise to evaluate new and existing supplier capabilities in terms of product, cost, quality, capacity, and fulfillment.
  • Propel supplier enhancements using Lean methodologies, advanced APQP tools, supplier scorecards, and assessments.
  • Ensure supplier adherence to standards while implementing systematic problem-solving and process improvement strategies to enhance performance.
  • Prioritize preferred suppliers based on thorough evaluations.
  • Act as a consultant to guide the Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Procurement teams in driving cost-effective enhancements to quality and manufacturing processes, minimizing waste, and improving product design.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership in sourcing and developing suppliers concerning technology, performance, quality, cost, logistics, and delivery.
  • Lead investigations into significant issues and special projects, fostering strong relationships with suppliers and the supply chain in product development and procurement.
  • Conduct new supplier validation audits, collaborating with suppliers on Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP).
  • Support new product launches by coordinating with suppliers to ensure key milestones are met.
  • Work alongside Design and Manufacturing Engineers to establish process parameters and criteria, ensuring supplier process capabilities align with product and process requirements.
  • Offer technical expertise to clients in resolving manufacturing-related technical challenges.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement solutions.
  • Cultivate and maintain robust relationships with internal and external stakeholders to optimize performance.
  • Communicate effectively across procurement and directly with management from customers and suppliers.
Required Skills
  • Background in Sourcing, Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Program Management is preferred.
  • Experience in vendor qualification development and implementation.
  • Familiarity with quality and business systems.
  • Strong commercial and financial understanding.
  • Proficient in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA).
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills, along with strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Capability to thrive in a diverse and dynamic environment.
  • Strong planning and prioritization skills.
  • Effective negotiation and influence skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and expertise in developing and executing objectives for self and others, contributing to both short-term and long-term business goals.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering is preferable.
  • Over 5 years of experience in mechanical assemblies, sheet metal, machining, and welding.
  • At least 3 years of experience in managing and developing suppliers.
  • Knowledge of PPAP and APQP processes.
  • Advanced understanding of APQP, process, and capacity improvement tools.
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Solid grasp of various manufacturing techniques.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills for managing supplier relationships.
  • Proficiency in project management, ensuring timely closure of initiatives.
  • Preferred certifications include Green Belt, DFSS, Black Belt, Lean, and familiarity with tools such as DOE, DFM, DFX, and VAVE.
