Role Overview

The Head of Ceded Reinsurance (North America) plays a critical role in contributing to AXIS Capital's gross and net profitability as a Senior Leadership position. With significant internal and external profiles due to diverse lines of business written and ceded from AXIS Capital's London and European offices, this position offers a unique opportunity to leverage expertise in specialty, property, and casualty lines of business and extensive networks with brokers and reinsurers to inform strategy and execution.

This role engages actively across lines of business and disciplines to support best execution of outwards placement processes and relationship management on behalf of AXIS Capital. The Head of Ceded Reinsurance (North America) will manage and be responsible for talent development of a team in AXIS Capital's NYC office, engaging within the CUO office to support portfolio optimization. Governance on reinsurance purchasing via a panel of senior and executive leadership applies to this role. Regulatory compliance and reporting requirements also fall under the responsibilities of the Head of Ceded Reinsurance (North America).

This position reports to the Global Head of Ceded Reinsurance (located in NYC) and involves regular interaction and collaboration with colleagues in Ceded Re London location on shared interests and relationship management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accountable for placement outcomes that meet AXIS agreed objectives and are compliant with AXIS governance and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage a local team located in New York City/Area office.
  • Manage reinsurer relationships and broker relationships locally and in collaboration with AXIS executive leadership, Global Head of Ceded Re, and London-based colleagues.
  • Actively and personally manage placement processes for placements with larger subject premiums or profile, supported by the NYC/New York area-based team and engagement with London business colleagues to ensure best execution.
  • Regularly engage internally with business colleagues and externally with local relationships to provide perspective to AXIS Capital regarding outwards products available.
  • Prepare and present presentations to governance committees and as required on an ad-hoc basis.
Requirements

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • A strong knowledge of property & casualty and specialty lines written in the North American market.
  • Broad networks of relationships in the North American market with brokers and reinsurers.
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in reinsurance buying, underwriting, or pricing-related roles.
  • Strong knowledge of reinsurance structures and application considerations.
  • Ability to present complex information to leadership in a compelling manner.
  • Ability to have productive engagements with colleagues in the CUO office, within the Ceded team, with businesses, and senior and executive leadership.
  • Ability to apply advanced expertise and professional concepts in novel ways, bringing new expertise to the organization.
  • Ability to review and identify drafting requirements in respect of reinsurance contract wording.
  • Ability to deliver outcomes reflecting stakeholder interests at business and group levels.
  • Ability to roll up sleeves and diligence details or expedite placement activities for best execution.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Strong negotiation skills.

Prior experience in management positions is preferred but not required.

What We Offer

For this position, we expect to offer a base salary in the range of $275,000 to $350,000 per annum, based on specific experience and work location. In addition, competitive target incentive compensation awards will be based on overall corporate and individual performance.
