Per-Diem Polysomnography Technologist Position

Job Summary:

Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking a highly skilled Per-Diem Polysomnography Technologist to join our team. As a key member of our Neurology department, you will be responsible for performing standard and complex all-night sleep recordings, multiple sleep latency tests, and maintenance of wakefulness tests.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Examine physician orders and protocols for each sleep study, reviewing existing information in the patient's record and recognizing chief sleep/wake complaints.
  • Greet and interview patients to assess current medication, recent caffeine/alcohol ingestion, current sleep patterns, and the need for treatment intervention during the study.
  • Communicate with the MD on call or unit director to clarify unclear or inappropriate orders and communicate information regarding the patient's status.
  • Set up and calibrate monitoring equipment with appropriate montage, measuring and applying necessary EEG electrodes using the 10/20 system.
  • Perform physiologic calibrations, verify the integrity of the recording, and note patient data every 20 minutes on software pop-up boxes.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to patients' medical problems and physiological events, especially cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory events, and seizures.
  • Carefully wake patients and record post-sleep calibrations, removing electrodes and ancillary monitors and assisting with Standard Precautions Infection Control procedures.
  • Prepare detailed reports of data and interventions used to diagnose and treat patients.
  • Conduct and score MSLTs using standard guidelines and prepare reports for interpreting physicians.
  • Attend seminars and professional meetings to keep knowledge and skills updated.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Registration by the BRPT preferred.
  • Must be CPR certified.
  • Must follow the AASM's guideline for 30 CMEs averaged over a 3-year period.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours with the primary emphasis on the night shift.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to use or be able to learn and use Natus/ResMed-based equipment systems.
  • Ability to learn new software applications.
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of MS applications.
  • Must possess good documentation skills.
  • Attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a certified hospital or secondary sleep training program, or certified AASM/A-Step program.
  • Previous experience preferred.
