About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Health Technician to join our team at the University of California, Irvine. As a key member of our Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) team, you will play a critical role in providing veterinary technical care for laboratory animals, ensuring their health and well-being, and supporting the research and teaching missions of our institution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide veterinary technical care for laboratory animals, including medical record maintenance, diagnostic procedures, physical examinations, treatments, necropsies, anesthesia support, surgical support, and post-operative care.
  • Conduct procedures related to the animal health monitoring (sentinel) program, including sample collection and submission, and communication of test results to veterinarians.
  • Participate in and/or conduct training and education of campus researchers and laboratory personnel on proper care and use of research animals.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an AVMA or State of California approved animal health technician program.
  • Prior experience in working with animals in a research or clinical setting.
  • Ability to perform a variety of animal research and husbandry procedures for a variety of species, including anesthesia induction, anesthesia monitoring, aseptic technique, restraint, injections, blood collection, and necropsy without detailed supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and tactfully with a broad variety of people verbally or in writing.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and redirect emphasis when requested or required by special circumstances or additional assignment.
  • Proven ability to function effectively as a team member, follow directions, work independently, or in shared assignment with others.
  • Proven ability to adhere to departmental attendance policies and standards.
  • Intermediate computer skills, sufficient to enter data into electronic databases, retrieve and sort data from electronic databases, send and receive emails, prepare written and audiovisual training materials, and prepare written reports.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and familiarity with local, state and federal animal welfare regulations and guidelines.
  • AALAS certification at (or eligibility for) ALAT level or higher.
  • Prior experience in teaching/training.
