Job Summary

The City of Kirkland is seeking a skilled Maintenance Worker to join our Public Works Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing manual labor and operating light equipment for maintenance or construction of the City's water, sewer, streets, and drainage systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform manual labor and operate light equipment for maintenance or construction of the City's water, sewer, streets, and drainage systems.
  • Assist Senior Maintenance Person in performing tasks and may be required to perform standby duty if there are not enough volunteers to fill the need.
  • Act as flagperson to control traffic while road work is being accomplished.
  • Perform landscaping, turf, and tree maintenance of City properties and R.O.W.s using elementary level skills of pruning, transplanting, planting, drainage, pesticide spraying, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, sweeping, blowing, and edging.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1 year of utility construction or landscaping experience.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power-driven tools.
  • Ability to operate light equipment, such as five-yard dump truck, backhoe as a loader, and concrete mixer among others.
  • Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet with the public and communicate effectively with citizens.
  • Ability to read blueprints and engineering plans.
  • Basic elementary skill levels in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, cement finishing, and mechanical skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Municipal experience.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to remain insurable under the City's insurance to operate motor vehicles.
  • Class A Combination Driver's License with air and tanker endorsements or ability to obtain within 12 months of date of hire.
  • Certified flagging card within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Pesticide spray certification within 6 months, depending on assigned area.
  • Lift truck card within 6 months, depending on assigned area.
