POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) provides comprehensive anesthesia care to patients undergoing surgical and medical procedures. This role encompasses both direct and indirect patient care, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective anesthesia services across various settings, including surgical, obstetric, and pain management environments.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico and federal DEA certificate
  • Active nursing license in the state of New Mexico
  • Graduation from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program
  • Certification as a nurse anesthetist from the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or its predecessor
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association
  • Valid New Mexico CRNA license

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES

  • Understanding of the nursing role and scope of practice as outlined by the New Mexico Nurse Practice Act
  • Familiarity with the nurse anesthetist role as defined by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)
  • Awareness of contemporary trends and standards in anesthesia care
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Proficiency in basic computer operations, including data entry and word processing
  • Expertise in utilizing anesthesia delivery equipment, including anesthesia machines, monitors, and IV pumps

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts thorough pre-anesthetic assessments and evaluations, including obtaining informed consent
  • Engages with patients to review their medical history and previous anesthesia experiences
  • Formulates and implements individualized anesthesia care plans
  • Reassesses patients immediately prior to anesthesia induction
  • Administers appropriate anesthetic techniques, including general, regional, and local anesthesia
  • Manages the administration of anesthetics and necessary adjunct medications to maintain physiological stability
  • Utilizes both non-invasive and invasive monitoring techniques to gather and interpret physiological data
  • Ensures effective airway management and respiratory support throughout the procedure
  • Oversees patient recovery from anesthesia, ensuring pain management and addressing any complications
  • Responds promptly to emergency situations, employing advanced life support techniques as needed
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient care and anesthesia records
  • Participates in the training and orientation of new staff members
  • Adheres to safety protocols to ensure a secure environment for patients and staff

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Engages in continuous professional development and participates in departmental meetings and quality improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrates a commitment to ethical practices and compliance with organizational policies

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position requires flexibility in work hours, including potential overtime and on-call responsibilities. The CRNA may encounter exposure to noise and hazardous materials, necessitating the ability to manage stress and interruptions effectively.
