Position Overview: The Clinical Unit Leader (CUL) operates under the general oversight of the department manager and/or director, adhering to the established policies and guidelines within the organization and specific unit. The primary focus is to serve as the shift supervisor and clinical liaison among staff, physicians, and management, ensuring consistent leadership on a daily basis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Function as a supervisor, mentor, and resource for nursing staff, ensuring adherence to unit standards and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Assist in the recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing evaluation of nursing personnel, including performance monitoring and problem resolution.
  • Act as a point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders, promoting a culture of exceptional customer service while meeting quality and accreditation standards.

Clinical Practice: Rotate through various shifts as determined by staffing requirements, providing clinical assessments, mentorship, and evaluations of nursing staff.

Management of Clinical Area: Engage in the development and execution of unit goals and objectives, ensuring staffing aligns with patient needs and budgetary constraints. Participate in daily operational planning and problem-solving for patient services.

Quality Assurance and Research: Contribute to the planning, coordination, and assessment of unit quality metrics and improvement initiatives. Encourage the integration of research findings into clinical practices among nursing staff.

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with a commitment to obtain a BSN within five years.
  • At least one year of experience in an acute care setting.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current Michigan Nursing License.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within one year of employment.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong problem-solving abilities and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced nursing processes, critical thinking, and assessment skills.
  • Familiarity with the patient population served by the department.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a leadership capacity (e.g., Charge Nurse, Supervisor).
  • Professional certifications that support a culture of nursing excellence.
