Key Responsibilities
Connect and disconnect trailers from tractors or converter dollies, which includes maneuvering dollies into position and adjusting the landing gear on semi-trailers or front supports on converter dollies.
Engage in frequent lifting, pulling, pushing, and transporting of products of various weights.
Ensure all shipments are secured using blocking, strapping, or load bars as necessary.
Conduct inspections of the vehicle for defects and safe operating conditions before, during, and after trips, and provide a written report on the vehicle's condition at the conclusion of each trip.
Maintain records required for compliance with state and federal regulations, including driver logs, fuel purchase records, mileage logs, and other legally mandated documentation.
Execute all tasks in accordance with company policies and procedures while adhering to all federal, state, and local regulations governing the safe operation of commercial motor vehicles.
Report any incidents involving the driver or company equipment to the traffic manager.
Utilize commercial driving skills to navigate the vehicle at varying speeds in challenging situations, such as heavy traffic, adverse weather conditions, and tight loading dock areas.
Ensure that all shipment documentation (e.g., manifests, customer invoices, bills of lading, or shipping orders) required for shipments is available for inspection and that appropriate paperwork accompanies shipments upon delivery.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and EquipmentMust possess the ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations, with a general mental capacity to manage receipts, interpret maps and road signs, and maintain logs.
Must have a working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems.
Must be familiar with DOT regulations regarding safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance, and the transportation of hazardous materials.
Must meet or exceed the medical standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Must successfully pass a hair drug test.
Consistent and punctual attendance is required.
Professional appearance and grooming consistent with the desired corporate image are expected.
Education and ExperienceMust hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A).
Must meet MVR Standards: 1) No more than two minor violations in any one year. 2) No more than three minor violations in three years. 3) No more than two major violations in three years. 4) No DUI or DWI in the past five years. Minor Violations include speeding less than 10 mph, overloads, minor equipment issues, and failure to possess proper documentation. Major Violations include DWI, DUI, failure to stop at traffic signals, at-fault accidents, exceeding the speed limit by 10+ mph, or driving with a suspended license.
Must have a minimum of one (1) year of prior tractor-trailer driving experience or demonstrate completion of a commercial operator's training program.
Physical RequirementsMust be able to remain alert while driving for up to 11 hours.
Must be capable of operating a manual transmission and using foot pedals.
Must be able to frequently squat to handle, position, and secure products.
Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle's cab as many as 60 times a day or more, with the cab floor typically 45 to 48 inches above ground level, requiring the use of ramps, steps, and handholds; this also involves frequent bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching, and balancing.
Must be able to frequently push or pull products weighing up to 250 pounds on a dolly or cart, as well as occasionally push or pull freight weighing up to 80 pounds without mechanical assistance.
Must be able to frequently load or unload full trailers of products weighing as much as 40,000 pounds, which may occur after up to 11 hours of driving.
