Cultural Anthropology Educator

Situated in the picturesque Puget Sound region, Tacoma is the third largest city in Washington State, boasting a vibrant and diverse population exceeding 200,000 residents. Tacoma Community College (TCC) is established on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples, particularly the Puyallup and Squaxin Island Tribes. The 1854 Medicine Creek Treaty resulted in their forced relocation to Reservations, paving the way for colonization; we acknowledge that our privilege to inhabit this land comes at a significant cost. We honor the resilience of the Puyallup and Squaxin Island peoples, who continue to reside here, advocate for their rights, and significantly contribute to our community's welfare. Our institution is dedicated to fostering partnerships and community connections with local indigenous populations. Furthermore, TCC stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and the Black community, enhancing collaborations with the Black Student Union and local organizations such as the Tacoma-Pierce County Black Collective and the Tacoma Urban League. We also actively support the Stop Asian Hate movement, featuring an Asian Pacific Islander Student Club and an Asian and Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Coalition. TCC is committed to creating more culturally responsive curricula by integrating educational content that highlights the experiences and contributions of Native, Black, Asian, and other marginalized communities. We continuously strive to evolve into an anti-racist institution.
To expand our faculty, we seek innovative and collaborative educators who reflect the diverse community we serve. Tacoma Community College is a public institution offering Associate and Bachelor's degrees, serving approximately 12,000 students. Our student body comprises 27% students of color, 60% female, with a median age of 26. We take pride in our identity as a community college, where our faculty engage in creative initiatives to enhance student retention and program completion, as well as community success. According to the Community College Survey of Student Engagement, TCC excels in active learning and academic challenge, thanks to our dedicated and scholarly faculty.
We are particularly focused on improving support for traditionally marginalized groups, including Black/African-American, Indigenous, People of Color, Dreamers, justice-involved individuals, immigrants and refugees, Veterans, individuals with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community. Therefore, TCC seeks candidates who:
- Value intellectual curiosity and innovative pedagogy
- Embrace diversity and exemplify respectful interactions
- Recognize and appreciate the vital role of diversity in educational settings
- Are dedicated to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student body
- Are committed to teaching in a community college environment
