Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and accomplished Structural Engineer to spearhead our Bridge Design Practice within the transportation design division in Virginia. This role requires a dynamic leader who can foster loyalty and commitment while delivering innovative bridge projects.

The selected candidate will report to the Virginia Operations Manager and should possess a proven history of managing bridge design initiatives, along with a solid understanding of VDOT standards.

Based in our Virginia office, this role is pivotal in pursuing and executing projects, managing talent, driving business development, and overseeing large and complex projects. The ideal candidate will be a proficient "seller/doer," adept at balancing business development with project management duties. Occasional travel to client or project sites may be necessary.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the preparation, coordination, and supervision of structural engineering, analysis, and modeling for civil structures, including bridges and retaining walls.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local agency requirements, as well as AASHTO LRFD Specifications.
  • Design structures in both concrete and steel.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the bridge design team.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop top-tier talent to strengthen our high-performance culture.
  • Contribute to performance reviews and development plans for team members.
  • Maintain high standards of quality and continuous improvement through innovative practices.
  • Monitor productivity and technical proficiency of assigned teams.
  • Collaborate with project engineers and discipline leads to establish budgets, schedules, and project plans.
  • Oversee compliance with project scope, schedule, and budget constraints, including negotiating change orders with clients.
  • Assist in proposal development and respond to RFQs, managing complex bridge projects.
  • Support structural efforts on design-build projects in coordination with other discipline leads.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with employees, clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with structural design leads across the organization to support major bridge design projects nationwide.

Qualifications:
  • 15+ years of experience in bridge design and engineering.
  • BS in Civil or Structural Engineering is required; MS in Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • Virginia PE licensure is mandatory.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry and VDOT standards.
  • Proven experience in leading structural design projects, including multi-span steel or concrete bridges.
  • Strong project and staff management skills with interdisciplinary coordination experience.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Microstation, LEAP Bridge, and VDOT Design programs.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis and Bentley OBD is advantageous.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for effective relationship-building with clients and team members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills suited for a fast-paced environment.
