GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Family Support Specialist will engage with families to build trusting relationships, evaluate their resource needs, and provide essential support, education, and resources during challenging times. Families will be empowered to develop and utilize the skills necessary to manage and effectively respond to crises and stressful situations. The specialist employs solution-focused interventions aimed at preventing child abuse and neglect. Responsibilities include case management and delivering home-based services in alignment with the quality standards and program guidelines of Community Action Partnership of Strafford County (CAPSC) and the Family Resource Center.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with relevant experience working with families, children, and young adults.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in service delivery to families with children and young adults.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in providing services to families at risk of abuse or neglect.
  • Familiarity with community resources in Strafford County.
  • Proficient in computer applications including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Parents as Teachers Certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support healthy development of children by assisting families in identifying and overcoming barriers to success in school.
  • Empower families to advocate for themselves and their children by collaborating with community agencies to develop family-centered and culturally responsive services.
  • Utilize a relationship-based approach with families, emphasizing empathetic understanding, genuine care, problem-solving, support, sensitive communication, and cultural awareness.
  • Facilitate the creation of an Individual Family Support Plan to assist families in achieving their goals, with regular updates.
  • Provide support to parents and guardians facing social, emotional, physical, and mental health challenges that affect their parenting abilities.
  • Promote safe and nurturing environments for children by educating parents on child development, health, safety, and parenting skills.
  • Lead playgroups, support groups, developmental screenings, and other Family Resource Center events for families in the community.
  • Assist families in developing healthy coping mechanisms for everyday challenges.
  • Support families in crisis situations.
  • Enhance family development by helping parents pursue education, find employment, and access community resources.
  • Act as an advocate for children and families, addressing unmet needs.
  • Provide families with information, education, and referrals to appropriate resources, ensuring follow-up as needed.
  • Assist with resource navigation within the Family Resource Center for walk-ins or referrals.
  • Participate in community networking events to promote the Family Resource Center and assist in planning and hosting events.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records, ensuring all documentation is current.
  • Attend biweekly supervision and actively participate in team meetings.
  • Continue professional development in child development, early childhood education, health, safety, nutrition, adult learning principles, and family dynamics.
  • Attend training conferences and workshops as directed by the supervisor.
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by the supervisor for the benefit of the program and agency.

EMPLOYMENT SCREENING

Valid Driver's License and insured vehicle required for job use, along with a driving record check, criminal record check, and randomized drug screening. Compliance with Head Start, Early Head Start, Childcare, and Home Visiting Programs includes criminal record checks and fingerprinting prior to employment. An initial physical examination record, including TB screening, must be obtained within 60 days of hire and updated every three years.
