We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Occupational Therapist to join our team at WMCHealth. As an Occupational Therapist, you will play a critical role in helping patients regain physical and mental functioning, and adjust to disabilities.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement medically prescribed occupational therapy programs to facilitate patient rehabilitation in a hospital, institution, or community setting.
- Plan and conduct activities to help patients regain physical or mental functioning, or adjust to handicaps, including manual arts and crafts, practice in function, prevocational, vocational, and homemaking skills.
- Instruct patients in self-help activities, such as eating, dressing, writing, and the use of adapted equipment and prosthesis.
- Evaluate patient function, interests, daily living skills, and capacities to determine the most effective treatment plan.
- Consult with other members of the rehabilitation team to select an activity program consistent with patient needs and capabilities.
- Assist patients in adjusting to disabilities and plan therapeutic exercises and skill drills to increase joint motion, muscle strength, manual dexterity, and coordination.
- Design and fit splints, braces, and adaptive devices under medical prescription and direct supervision.
- Select constructive activities suited to patient physical capacity, intelligence level, and interest to upgrade patient independence and prepare them for employment or daily life tasks.
- Teach patients skills and techniques required for participation in activities, including painting, pottery making, basket weaving, and rug making.
- Observe patient responses to given activities, evaluate and record patient progress, and maintain records and charts as required.
- Assist visually handicapped patients in adjusting to their limitations and help them initiate new learning skills.
- Adapt equipment and work-living environment to meet patient needs.
- Determine supplies and equipment for given activities and programs.
- Encourage and motivate patients to participate in programs and assist them in developing sociofunctional living skills.
- Lay out materials for patient use, clean and repair tools at the end of sessions, and perform other duties as required.
- A minimum of six months of supervised occupational therapy experience satisfactory to the New York State Board for Occupational Therapy.
- A graduate from an accredited Occupational Therapy Program with a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy, required. A Master's degree is preferred.
- A limited permit to practice Occupational Therapy issued by the New York State Education Department, and a license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as an Occupational Therapist.
- Good knowledge of modern, professional theory, technique, and practices of occupational therapy, as well as the ability to perform a variety of handiwork and artwork, motivate patients, instruct patients in therapeutic activities, and plan, lay out, and implement activities designed to achieve maximum patient recovery.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position, and to work well with others.
