Role Summary
The Healthcare Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting healthcare providers and delivering direct patient care. This position involves preparing patients for assessments and treatments, aiding healthcare professionals during procedures, conducting laboratory tests, and educating patients about their treatment plans.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for assessments and treatments, including taking vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, respiration, height, weight, and BMI. Accurately document this information in the patient's electronic medical records (EMR).
- Administer vision and hearing assessments as needed. Support healthcare providers during procedures, which may include electrocardiograms, ear irrigations, applying or changing sterile dressings, performing pap smears, and suturing.
- Conduct routine point-of-care laboratory tests, such as hemoccult and dip urinalysis, ensuring results are documented in EMR. Collaborate closely with healthcare providers and lead medical assistants.
- Perform standard laboratory tasks, including obtaining specimens through venipuncture, capillary, and urine collection, ensuring proper labeling and storage of specimens.
- Order laboratory analyses and coordinate the transport of specimens to the laboratory, following up to ensure timely results.
- Document laboratory results and inform healthcare providers of critical values. Explain lab results to patients as requested. Under physician direction, manage prescription refills to pharmacies and document these actions in medical records.
- Prepare examination rooms by organizing sterile instruments and stocking medical supplies appropriately.
- Order necessary medical and laboratory supplies, maintaining adequate inventory levels.
- Dispose of medical waste following established protocols. Clean and maintain laboratory and examination rooms, as well as other equipment.
- Implement quality control procedures to ensure equipment functions properly and arrange for repairs as needed.
- Assist with administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, managing medical records, filing, and coordinating patient transportation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic medical practices and procedures, including infection control and OSHA regulations. Provide unbiased assistance to patients of all backgrounds.
- Respect and uphold the patient's rights to treatment and involvement in their care decisions.
- Practice ethical responsibility, considering the cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs of the patients served.
- Comply with established infection control measures, universal precautions, OSHA regulations, and risk management protocols.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree preferred. Medical Assistant Certification is a plus.
Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in a community healthcare environment is preferred.
Communication Skills: Bilingual candidates are preferred. Must possess the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general publications. Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to inquiries from various stakeholders.
Mathematical Skills: Must be proficient in basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Reasoning Skills: Ability to solve practical problems and handle various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Capable of interpreting a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
