Position Summary
The Organ Procurement Specialist at Atrium Health plays a crucial role in the management and recovery of viable organs for transplantation or research purposes. Under the guidance of the Organ Services Manager, this position is responsible for the comprehensive evaluation of potential donors, overseeing the management of the donation process, coordinating organ placement, and facilitating surgical recovery. The Specialist also collaborates with Transplant Centers and other Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO) to ensure effective recovery efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Adheres to the policies and procedures established by Atrium Health, relevant healthcare institutions, and regulatory bodies governing the organ donation sector.
- Collaborates effectively with the Atrium Health team, hospital personnel, medical professionals, and surgeons to manage the clinical evaluation and care of potential organ donors.
- Utilizes expertise in critical care to provide insights and support during the referral and recovery processes, including hemodynamic monitoring and ventilator management.
- Demonstrates empathy and professionalism when interacting with bereaved families and healthcare staff.
- Exercises sound judgment in assessing case complexities and escalates issues to higher authorities when necessary.
- Engages in quality assurance initiatives and contributes to performance enhancement activities.
- Follows directives from the Administrator on Call (AOC) and/or Medical Director to ensure proper donor management and completion of organ donation responsibilities.
- Conducts rounds and educational sessions in healthcare facilities to identify potential donors and promote awareness as scheduled by the Hospital Development team.
Physical Requirements
Must be willing to travel over 100 miles and adapt to various hospital settings. Ability to manage irregular sleep schedules and work extended hours (25+ hours), including being on call for 24-hour periods over consecutive days. The role requires working in office settings, patient care areas, and operating rooms. Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, possess good visual acuity, and demonstrate precise manual dexterity. Use of a personal vehicle for business purposes is necessary.
Qualifications
Registered Nurse with a current license, or a minimum of three years' experience as a Paramedic, or three years' experience in an Organ Procurement Organization with a focus on organ recovery or preservation is required. Certification as a Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) is preferred.
