Sacramento, California, United States State of California Full time

The State of California is seeking a dedicated Civil Transportation Specialist to join the Division of Engineering Services (DES), Structures and Engineering Services (SES), Office of Design and Technical Services (ODTS). This role represents the entry, initial working, and journey level of professional engineering responsibilities within Caltrans.

Under the guidance of a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor) from the Special Designs Branch (SDB), the incumbent will engage in a diverse range of professional engineering tasks, both in office and field environments. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing plans and specifications for various structures including bridges, walls, underground facilities, barriers, and signage.
  • Conducting calculations and structural analyses utilizing advanced computer software.
  • Creating detailed designs in compliance with established specifications and reference materials.

As individuals gain experience, they will be entrusted with more complex assignments and may lead teams of engineering and technical staff, while also performing additional related duties as necessary.

Applicants are encouraged to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. It is essential to meet MQs under Pattern II and to be aware of the requirements for the in-person written hurdle exam. Candidates should refrain from taking the online exam before successfully completing the written hurdle, as this may adversely affect their eligibility for hiring.

For clarification regarding educational requirements, candidates should reach out to the Human Resources Contact prior to participating in the online Training and Experience Evaluation.

Eligibility for employment may be influenced by the candidate's score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) Exam. Those without current eligibility must be on the state examination list to qualify for these positions.

Additionally, the Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory assignment lasting between 24 to 33 months for all permanent, full-time Transportation Engineer (Civil) employees who have completed their probationary period. This program aims to enhance project delivery knowledge, skills, and abilities through rotations in various functional units, including core assignments in Design and Construction.
