Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fire Equipment Superintendent to join our team at the City of Reno. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for supervising, directing, and performing skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, modification, and repair of firefighting equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, plan, train, review, and perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel powered, heavy and light fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, and perform condition tests on equipment such as Fire Department cars, trucks, and pumpers.
  • Re-assemble engines, test, tune, and adjust fuel delivery systems, brakes, clutches, transmissions, and differentials.
  • Repair and rebuild front ends and brake systems.
  • Perform technical maintenance on specialized firefighting equipment, such as fire pumps, portable generators, smoke ejectors, hydraulic systems, sirens, and beacon lights.
  • Maintain records of equipment and materials used, and time spent on each piece of equipment, including data entry using modern office equipment.
  • Weld, fabricate, and modify equipment.
  • Use overhead crane and ground lifts to lift motors and heavy equipment.
  • Respond to emergency scenes as requested to perform mechanical and other support work.
Requirements
  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of two years of college or trade school supplemented by completion of apprenticeship in automotive and heavy truck mechanics.
  • Seven years of increasingly responsible experience as a journeyman automotive and heavy truck mechanic, including four years of experience in the repair of heavy and light duty fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. A non-commercial class B driver's license with an F endorsement or equivalent must be obtained within two (2) years from appointment.
Working Environment

The Fire Equipment Superintendent will work in a shop environment with occasional field environment with some travel from site to site. The incumbent will be exposed to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions. The incumbent may be required to respond to emergency calls after hours including evenings and weekends.

The primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop environment. The incumbent will be required to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time, frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist. The incumbent will be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights, operate assigned equipment and vehicles, and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
