Job Summary

To maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and employees, and to safeguard all hospital property against theft, fire, and vandalism.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a Safe and Secure Environment: Ensure the safety and security of employees, physicians, patients, visitors, equipment, systems, and facilities in accordance with established departmental practices.
  • Patrol and Monitor Hospital Campus: Patrol the hospital campus, direct automobile traffic, control crowds, prevent and deter crime, fire prevention, theft prevention, and safety hazard surveillance patrols to identify suspicious persons or activity and initiate corrective action as appropriate.
  • Monitor Security Systems: Monitor Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), alarm panels, HCRS, and Starcom radios, and other equipment as required, and report any equipment that is not functional to the Lead Officer and/or Supervisor on duty immediately.
  • Provide Escort Services: Provide escorts for employees, physicians, patients, and visitors, and transport them in wheelchairs if necessary.
  • Assist Security Personnel and Hospital Employees: Provide assistance to other security personnel and hospital employees as necessary to ensure adequate monitoring and follow-up of unusual occurrences.
  • Enforce Hospital Policies: Enforce hospital policies, such as visitor policy and others, and complete all departmental-related paperwork accurately and as required.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Respond quickly to hospital codes and emergencies, and perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections and initials/dates the inspection tag and/or notifies the Lead Officer or Supervisor when servicing is required.
  • Handle Confidential Information: Demonstrate discretion in handling confidential information, maintain confidentiality of all employee, patient, visitor, physician, hospital, and security-related information, and immediately report all safety hazards, malfunctioning equipment, and other potential problems to the supervisor.
  • Provide Access to Hospital Areas: Provide access to various areas of the hospital when required and/or approved by a supervisor, and enforce parking policy by issuing parking violation notices to employees who violate them.
  • Release Patient Valuables: Accept and release patient valuables (per policy) as needed, and release deceased patients (per policy) as needed.
  • Investigate Security-Related Incidents: Investigate and document all security-related incidents via Report Exec on the day the incident was reported.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Previous Hospital Security Experience: Previous hospital security experience is preferred.
  • Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are required.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Basic computer skills are required.
  • CPR/AED Certification: CPR/AED certification by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross (within six months of employment) is required.
Work Environment and Physical Demands

Exposed to heat and cold while doing exterior patrols during inclement weather. Walking 70% of the day; sitting - 30% of the day. Ascend and/or descend up to 9 flights of stairs, as needed, during code situations only. Lift and carry between 10-20 lbs. (fire extinguishers, patients, etc.), in partnership with other staff for safe lifting techniques, almost always including safe lifting equipment to perform the lifting. Potential exposure to communicable diseases when dealing with patients and the public.
