The role involves maintaining thorough and precise documentation of all activities related to medication use to guarantee the proper distribution of pharmaceuticals. All responsibilities will be subject to evaluation by a licensed pharmacist.
Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist, supports the achievement of departmental objectives while adhering to established policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations. Assists in the preparation of necessary reports by gathering relevant information. Helps in the troubleshooting and upkeep of the automated medication distribution system, serving as a resource for nursing staff and pharmacy technicians regarding the operation and management of drugs within the system. Assists pharmacists in processing orders and preparing intravenous medications for delivery. Regularly checks inventory to ensure compliance with FDA regulations. Participates in training pharmacy technicians and other support staff to facilitate the medication distribution process and ensure timely medication delivery. Under supervision, provides guidance to patients, families, and healthcare professionals on the use of various medications, including dosage, side effects, and formulation. Under supervision, compounds, labels, and packages medications and pharmaceutical products. Ensures the secure storage of controlled substances under supervision. Prepares clear and concise clinical summaries for use by nursing staff, medical personnel, and pharmacy teams under supervision. Upon demonstrating competency, consults with medical staff regarding the appropriate use of medications and pharmaceuticals based on patient care principles. Upon demonstrating competency, collaborates with unit-based staff and medical personnel regarding prescriptions, orders, medication detailing, errors, adverse reactions, and patient concerns. Engages in meetings and committees, representing the department and hospital in community outreach initiatives. Participates in multidisciplinary quality improvement teams. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Currently enrolled in a Pharm.D. program accredited by ACPE.
Experience
- Less than 1 year and 6 months of experience in a hospital environment.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certification from a national pharmacy technician certification program is required.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Maryland or eligible for a pharmacy student exemption from registration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency is preferred.
