POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides assistance in the assessment and treatment of patients by managing patient data, maintaining medical records, aiding in in-office procedures and assessments, administering medications, and delivering education to patients and their caregivers. Responsibilities are carried out under the supervision and guidance of qualified clinical personnel as detailed in the Clinical Support Staff Scope of Practice document.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Welcomes and respectfully guides patients and visitors to examination areas.
  • Identifies and records the purpose of the visit; applies analytical skills within the role to determine if patient information necessitates further follow-up.
  • Conducts initial screening in accordance with protocols established by the supervising healthcare provider; gathers necessary information from patients to complete relevant electronic medical record templates.
  • Records patient vital signs accurately in the electronic medical record, including pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, height, and weight; calculates and documents Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • Inputs medication, laboratory, and radiology orders into the electronic medical record following state, local, and professional guidelines.
  • Performs diagnostic tests as instructed by healthcare providers and may operate equipment for routine diagnostic assessments.
  • Handles basic Gaps in Care responsibilities.
  • Credentialed Medical Assistants will conduct TB testing.
  • Monitors and communicates laboratory/diagnostic test results to patients as directed by the provider, following office protocols; provides patients with instructions based on received test results.
  • Administers prescribed medications and facilitates prescription renewals as instructed by healthcare providers.
  • Conducts general specimen collection tasks (including blood, urine, throat swabs, etc.) and/or assists with other office procedures as necessary, adhering to all specified policies and safety protocols.
  • Engages in disease management initiatives under the supervision of Care Managers and/or Nurse Managers.
  • Contributes to enhancing practice performance on quality incentives, including but not limited to Provider Dashboard, Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), and Health Plan incentives.
  • Provides education to patients and families as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Records and relays accurate, comprehensive messages in a timely manner.
  • Acts as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers when necessary, ensuring prompt and courteous follow-up on patient inquiries.
  • Participates in required meetings and serves on committees as requested.
  • Supports other offices and attends training sessions as assigned.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned within the scope of Medical Assistant certification.

MEASUREMENT OF PERFORMANCE:

Performance is evaluated based on adherence to organizational values and expectations as outlined in the performance review documentation.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of an accredited/approved:

  • Medical Assistant program and externship;
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program;
  • Paramedic program; or
  • Certified Athletic Trainer.

If credentialed, maintains current Medical Assistant re-certification continuing education units.

CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE:

MA-Non-Credentialed I: Eligible for Medical Assistant Certification or EMT with an active license in the State of Michigan, or Paramedic with successful completion of the National Registry Paramedic Exam and/or holds a current license in the State of Michigan. Valid CPR certification required.

MA-Credentialed I: Certification as a Medical Assistant through recognized certifying agencies.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

0-1 year of previous clinical experience or a combination of education and experience preferred. In the absence of completed MA Program/Externship/Internship, must have 2+ years of clinical experience providing support in a community-based clinic, subject to standardized testing and evaluation of clinical skills.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS):

  • Knowledge of compliance aspects of clinical care and patient privacy best practices.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational information.
  • Ability to monitor, organize, and maintain cleanliness of exam rooms and medical supply inventory.
  • Ability to travel to other office/practice sites as needed.
  • Successful completion of competency-based training within the introductory period.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Regular physical activity including keyboarding, phone work, and charting.
  • Frequent computer work.
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs.
  • Physical activity involving patient handling, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, kneeling, and twisting.
  • Occasional lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 100 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and depth perception.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient for operating office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively over the phone and in person for extended periods.

MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:

This role operates within a medical facility, requiring regular movement to various locations. Exposure to hazardous materials, including bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids, is present. Interaction with patients, many of whom may be distressed, can be stressful and may lead to competing priorities.
