Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution
  • Valid Michigan Elementary Teaching Certification (K-5 All/K-8 SC)
  • Preferred: Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in Elementary Education
Primary Purpose:
To foster a dynamic elementary grade program and a classroom environment conducive to learning and personal development; to build effective relationships with students; to inspire students to cultivate skills, attitudes, and knowledge essential for a solid foundation in elementary education tailored to each student's capabilities; to establish positive connections with parents and fellow staff members.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:
Duties of this role encompass, but are not limited to:
A. Instructs students in reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, writing, science, art, health, and other related subjects, utilizing the curriculum approved by the Board of Education, aligned with common core state standards and other suitable learning activities.
B. Guides students in citizenship and fundamental subject matter.
C. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to meet each student's needs.
D. Employs diverse instructional strategies, including inquiry, group discussions, lectures, and discovery learning.
E. Translates lesson plans into engaging learning experiences to maximize instructional time.
F. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior necessary for a productive learning environment.
G. Assesses students' academic and social development, maintains accurate records, and prepares progress reports.
H. Engages with parents through conferences and other communication methods to discuss students' progress and explain the school program.
I. Identifies student needs and collaborates with other professionals to address health, attitude, and learning challenges.
J. Creates an inviting learning atmosphere through functional and appealing displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
K. Maintains professional growth through participation in in-service education activities.
L. Collaborates with the appropriate administrator to develop evaluation methods in accordance with established guidelines.
M. Selects and requests instructional materials; maintains necessary inventory records.
N. Supervises students during out-of-classroom activities throughout the school day.
O. Administers group standardized assessments in line with state testing requirements.
P. Participates in curriculum development initiatives as required.
Q. Engages in faculty committees and sponsors student activities.
R. Works collaboratively with colleagues to support students transitioning from elementary to middle school.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to perform multiple technical tasks and adapt skills to meet evolving job demands.
  • Competencies required include: applying assessment tools; operating standard office equipment; planning and managing projects; maintaining accurate records; and utilizing relevant software applications.
  • Basic math skills are necessary, including calculations with fractions, percentages, and ratios; reading technical information; composing various documents; and facilitating group discussions.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, age-appropriate activities, grammar and punctuation concepts, health standards, and office procedures is essential.
  • Ability to organize numerous activities, meetings, and events; gather and classify data; and operate job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work independently and collaboratively in diverse circumstances; analyze data using defined processes; and operate equipment with established methods.
  • Ability to engage with a diverse range of individuals and groups; manage varied data types; and utilize specific job-related equipment.
  • Independent problem-solving skills are required to analyze issues and develop action plans.
  • Specific competencies necessary include: adapting to changing priorities; communicating effectively with diverse groups; establishing productive relationships; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines; and working collaboratively.
Physical Demands: The physical requirements for this position include:
  • Occasional lifting and moving of supplies up to 25 pounds, requiring bending and lifting.
  • Ability to utilize various instructional materials in the classroom.
  • Manual dexterity for manipulating objects and using office equipment.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Normal vision and hearing, with or without aids.
  • Mobility within the assigned location throughout the day.
Work Environment: The characteristics of the work environment include:
  • Noise levels may vary from soft to loud, often moderate to loud.
  • Interaction with students, staff, parents/guardians, and occasionally the public is required.
  • Responsibility for the safety and well-being of students may be part of the role.
Terms and Conditions of Employment:
  • Ten-month academic year
  • Salary based on the current contract with Wayne County MEA/NEA
