Role Overview:
Under the guidance of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatic Safety Officer is responsible for upholding safe swimming conditions in and around the aquatic facilities. This role is pivotal in creating a welcoming and secure environment that adheres to YMCA standards and procedures.
Essential Qualifications:
- Minimum age requirement of 16 years
- Certifications in Basic Life Support or Professional Rescuer CPR/AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration
- Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent (must transition to YMCA certification within the first 60 days)
- Ability to respond promptly to safety and emergency situations
- Exemplify YMCA values and leadership qualities
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to exceptional customer service and hospitality
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain vigilant surveillance of the aquatic area
- Understand and execute all emergency protocols, responding immediately to incidents as per YMCA guidelines
- Consistently apply safety regulations and policies for the aquatic environment
- Keep accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and relevant health authorities
- Conduct equipment checks and ensure availability of necessary resources
- Perform chemical testing when not actively guarding and take appropriate measures
- Maintain required certifications and participate in ongoing training
- Assist in various YMCA activities and community engagement as needed
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings and training sessions
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of shifts
- Wear the designated YMCA uniform, including the approved lifeguard attire and necessary safety equipment

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform all necessary lifeguard duties, remain alert to sounds and signals of distress, and maintain focus without lapses in attention.
Employment Requirements:
- Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, including criminal record, drug screening, and motor vehicle record check
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship
