Job Summary

The Consumer & Mortgage Loan Officer will be responsible for originating, managing, and closing consumer and mortgage loans. This role requires regular communication with members, working closely with the Branch Manager, and maintaining a high level of member service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Familiarity with core operating systems and ability to process basic transactions.
  • Effective communication with members via various channels, including mail, email, phone, and in-person interactions.
  • Converting incoming calls into leads for new business opportunities.
  • Managing new leads and following up on referrals.
  • Pre-qualifying members by discussing rates, terms, and financial options.
  • Entering data into loan management systems, spreadsheets, and other relevant tools.
  • Assisting in maintaining established record-keeping protocols to comply with internal, local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintaining loan application workflow, including verification of information and timely review and underwriting of applications.
  • Underwriting consumer loans based on established guidelines.
  • Approving loans that meet CU guidelines, within authorized limits and established timeframes.
  • Making alternative recommendations for non-conforming loans.
  • Preparing and presenting recommendations to management for loans that are exceptions to the guidelines.
  • Coordinating the preparation and issuance of adverse action letters to members.
  • Compliance with updates and changes to loan programs, processes, guidelines, and consumer and mortgage lending software.
  • Addressing questions and resolving disputes between CU and members using knowledge of consumer loan underwriting process and legal requirements.
  • Participating in credit union training programs and other functions as requested.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Outgoing and approachable personality, with confidence in interacting with team members at all levels.
  • Excellent communication skills via phone, personal contact, and written communication.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently.
  • Good judgment, ability to accept responsibility, and handle confidential information.
  • Self-starter, dependable, accurate in completing responsibilities, with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to assume additional duties/projects as they arise.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule during normal business hours.
  • Ability to accept and facilitate change, whether indicated by corporate needs, market, or regulatory requirements.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is a must.
  • High school diploma or equivalent education, including basic math skills and data entry knowledge.
  • Experience in consumer and mortgage lending/underwriting and knowledge of consumer loan products is essential.
  • Computer proficiency, including use of Microsoft Office suite and loan underwriting software.
  • Ability to understand lending regulations.
  • NMLS license is preferred, but not required.
