Job Summary

UPMC University of Pittsburgh Physicians is seeking a full-time Medical Laboratory Technician to join their Department of Ophthalmology team. This position will work Monday through Friday, daylight hours, processing samples relating to ocular microbiology in the state-of-the-art Mercy Pavilion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process and analyze laboratory samples, ensuring accurate and timely results.
  • Interact with laboratory customers, responding to inquiries and providing excellent customer service.
  • Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures, recognizing critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results.
  • Enter accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests, with High Complexity testing performed under the oversight of a Medical Lab Scientist.
  • Meet established testing protocols for precision and accuracy, recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs.
  • Operate and maintain equipment, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies, using materials and reagents cost-effectively.
  • Follow all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines, maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Assist with the training and orienting of new employees, students, and residents.
Requirements
  • Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience.
  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Minimum 1 year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
  • New York license required for NY locations.
  • Act 34.
