Job Title: School Nurse

Job Summary:

The School Nurse is a vital member of the Richmond Public Schools team, responsible for providing healthcare services to students in a school setting. This role requires a strong commitment to promoting the health and well-being of students, working closely with school staff, parents, and healthcare providers to achieve this goal.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform health screenings and administer medication as needed
  • Manage student health records and provide first aid and emergency care when necessary
  • Develop and implement health-related policies and procedures for the school
  • Collaborate with the school health education committee and administrators to develop an effective school health program
  • Supervise Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and participate in the work of the Health Services team
  • Provide health education and counseling to students, staff, and parents
  • Conduct medical case finding, screening, and referral activities related to health defects of selected students
  • Observe students regularly to detect health needs and maintain up-to-date cumulative health records
  • Refer students to private or community resources as needed and report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters
  • Provide emergency nursing services for sick or injured students at school and notify parents of students about illnesses, physical defects, and potential health problems
  • Assume authority for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness and implement Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases
Qualifications:
  • Valid Virginia license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Successful completion of a program leading to a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse License
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • Excellent oral, written communication, organizational, and public relations skills
  • Ability to work effectively with children, young adults, families, teachers, and school administrators
  • Comprehensive knowledge of public school education procedures and policies
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and adapt to changing priorities
