Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Fleet Equipment Mechanic Intern to join our team at the Texas Department of Transportation. As a Fleet Equipment Mechanic Intern, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the maintenance and repair of a wide range of vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment, including inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs.
  • Support Shop Technicians with the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Assist in preparing vehicles for sales and new equipment for services.
  • Complete repair order documentation and enter information into the fleet information management system.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
  • Must be a student in high school or other educational institution or accepted into a college, university, or educational institution.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Employees at least 18 years of age with a valid driver's license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mechanical repair procedures for diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.
  • Using computers and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.
  • Brake repairs to include antilocking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes, and hydraulic brake systems.
  • Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.

  • Ability to protect sensitive and confidential information.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat.
  • Subject to noise.
  • Required to wear PPE (safety shirt/vest, eye protection, hard hat, gloves, etc.).
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
