Library Systems & Services is seeking a Metadata Management Specialist to support a significant federal initiative focused on bibliographic data management. This role involves assisting with metadata entry, quality assurance, and related activities for government publications.

The Metadata Management Specialist will leverage data from various governmental systems, including bibliographic records, to develop precise and comprehensive metadata records for a range of government documents and publications across multiple formats (including documents, images, audio, and video).

This is a full-time position, requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Generate and revise bibliographic records for the Retrospective Cataloging Conversion Project within the Rare Book & Special Collections Division.
  • Produce necessary metadata outputs for federal information documents or systems, utilizing source data, bibliographic records, and other relevant resources.
  • Examine digital images in various formats to ensure adherence to governmental standards.
  • Document metadata associated with image review findings in accordance with established specifications.
  • Validate content across different formats for thoroughness and modify or supplement metadata as directed.
  • Identify and report any discrepancies that necessitate further attention from cataloging professionals.
  • Utilize information from various collections to create or update bibliographic records.
  • Recognize Personally Identifiable Information (PII) as part of the review process.
  • Test system changes by entering new data and assessing outputs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Applicants should possess the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in data entry or metadata services.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel, along with familiarity with other business applications.
  • Experience with collaborative online platforms such as SharePoint.
  • Demonstrated expertise in quality control processes.
  • Experience in drafting policies or procedures.
  • Familiarity with various text, audio, and image formats, including TIFF, JPEG2000, and PDF.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with a diverse group of professionals.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards and schemas, including SuDoc, RDA, and MARC21.
  • Understanding of federal publications and electronic resources.
  • General awareness of the content and organization of federal government publications.


Physical Requirements:

Candidates must be able to:

  • Move within the workspace and lift, push, pull, or carry items weighing up to 25 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 35 pounds.
  • Maintain focus on tasks for extended periods, particularly when working with computer screens or detailed documents.
