Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the Senior Psychologist (Supervisor), the Recreation Therapist provides specialized programs and services for inmates, promoting social interaction, encouraging profitable and appropriate use of leisure time, and preparing them for re-entry to the general population or parole. Consultation with Interdisciplinary Treatment Teams (IDTT), Primary Clinicians, Educational staff, Correctional Counselors, and Custody personnel is essential for developing and implementing recreational activities that enhance clinical improvement in the level of functioning of inmates.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement recreational programs for inmates, focusing on social interaction, leisure time management, and re-entry preparation.
  • Collaborate with IDTT, Primary Clinicians, Educational staff, Correctional Counselors, and Custody personnel to ensure effective program implementation.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to inmates, staff, and other stakeholders to promote positive outcomes.
  • Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify inmate needs and develop targeted interventions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community resources and organizations to enhance program offerings.
Requirements
  • Equivalent to graduation from a recognized college with a major in recreation or recreation therapy, including supervised field work.
  • Registration as a senior will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation or its equivalent and completion of the required field work before being considered eligible for appointment.
Working Conditions

Travel is required.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are meeting Minimum Qualifications with education, you must include your unofficial transcripts/diploma for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
