Job OverviewPosition Summary

The Oncology Nursing Specialist plays a pivotal role within the Cancer Institute team at Novant Health, fostering genuine connections with patients and their support networks. This role involves collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate tailored care strategies that enhance health outcomes or facilitate a dignified end-of-life experience. The RN merges evidence-based practices with empathy to guide patients through their healthcare journeys.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducting consultations and follow-up visits - Collaborating closely with healthcare providers to gather patient health histories and vital signs, communicating findings, assisting in examinations, and educating patients and their caregivers. Supporting providers during specialized procedures by monitoring patients pre- and post-procedure, and ensuring thorough understanding of care instructions.
  • Cross-training with various healthcare professionals - Assisting physicians during treatment visits on a weekly basis, evaluating patients for any changes or needs during radiation therapy, and obtaining vital signs to relay to the physician prior to patient consultations. Reinforcing patient education regarding potential side effects, providing skincare guidance, assessing hydration levels, administering IV fluids and medications as necessary, and assisting with specialized tasks within the Radiation Oncology department.

Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
    • If your RN nursing license has been inactive, retired, or lapsed for five years or more and you have not been licensed in another state during that time, successful completion of a Board-approved refresher course is required prior to reactivating or reinstating your license. To be considered for current licensure status, you must apply for reinstatement within one year of completing the refresher course.
  • Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant experience preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: Current RN Licensure in the appropriate state is required, along with any advanced certifications mandated by the facility.
  • Additional Skills: Strong customer service orientation, effective communication skills (both verbal and non-verbal), interpersonal relationship abilities, conflict resolution capabilities, critical thinking skills, and computer proficiency. Advanced training as required by the department.
