Clinical Exercise Specialist

Position Overview:
The Clinical Exercise Specialist plays a crucial role in the assessment and management of patients with chronic health conditions. This position involves conducting physician-recommended cardiopulmonary exercise evaluations, which may include both exercise and pharmacologic cardiac stress testing. Additionally, the specialist is responsible for designing and implementing exercise rehabilitation programs tailored to individuals with various chronic diseases, particularly those affecting cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic health.
Emergency Response:
The Clinical Exercise Specialist is trained to identify and react promptly to potential emergency situations, ensuring patient safety during assessments and training sessions. This role requires sound clinical judgment regarding the safety and appropriateness of various assessment and training procedures.
Licensure and Certification Requirements:
To be eligible for this position, candidates must possess the following certifications:
- Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
- Certification must be obtained within the first six months of employment.
For continued employment, the following certifications are required:
- Current ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist certification
- Current CPR (BLS-C) certification
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
Experience Requirements:
Required:
- No specific experience is mandated.
Preferred:
- A minimum of two years of experience in exercise testing for clinical cardiopulmonary populations or in a cardiovascular/pulmonary rehabilitation setting.
Educational Background:
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or a related allied health discipline.
Preferred:
- Master’s Degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or a related allied health field.
Independent Responsibilities:
The Clinical Exercise Specialist is responsible for administering prescribed cardiopulmonary assessments and developing rehabilitation prescriptions. This role requires the ability to exercise judgment in adjusting testing and exercise parameters, as well as determining the appropriate time to resume or terminate assessments based on clinical observations and established protocols.
Team Collaboration:
As a member of a self-directed team, the Clinical Exercise Specialist contributes to problem-solving efforts and ensures a safe environment for all patients. Any unresolved issues will be escalated to the administrative manager for further assistance.

Physical Demands:
Physical requirements include the ability to lift weights as necessary. The position involves frequent bending, walking long distances, climbing, reaching overhead, and repetitive motions.

Strong cognitive skills are essential, including recall, reasoning, problem-solving, and effective communication. The work environment is fast-paced and requires the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to frequent changes.
