The Public Safety Dispatch Center serves as the central hub for all communications related to police and fire services. The role of the Public Safety Dispatcher is critical in managing both incoming and outgoing communications, as well as handling walk-in inquiries and written correspondence. This position is primarily responsible for the timely deployment of public safety personnel and resources in accordance with established departmental protocols.

Hiring Process: The selection process for this role includes a comprehensive review of applications and resumes, a written assessment, an in-person interview, a thorough background check, a polygraph test, and a medical evaluation with drug screening. The entire hiring process may take several months, and candidates not selected are encouraged to apply for future openings.

Position Details: This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, with a rotating shift schedule. Compensation ranges from $22.03 to $31.82 per hour. The position remains open until filled.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain familiarity with departmental procedures regarding radio and communication equipment, as well as the computerized/manual call management systems.
  2. Respond promptly and professionally to all incoming calls, assisting the public in a calm and courteous manner.
  3. Coordinate emergency responses for police, fire, and medical services at various incident scenes.
  4. Dispatch necessary units for police, fire, and ambulance services as required.
  5. Assess medical emergencies and provide appropriate assistance within the scope of training.
  6. Be well-versed in emergency protocols to ensure immediate activation when necessary.
  7. Acquire knowledge of the community's geography to enhance the efficiency of dispatch operations.
  8. Manage the dispatch of security, medical alert, and fire alarm responses.
  9. Ensure dispatched personnel are fully briefed on all relevant information affecting their response.
  10. Notify the Shift Commander if communication with an officer on patrol cannot be established within a reasonable timeframe.
  11. Monitor surveillance systems to maintain security and oversee individuals in custody.
  12. Disseminate information regarding wanted persons, stolen vehicles, and other relevant police data.
  13. Assist the public with inquiries at the police headquarters.
  14. Recall off-duty personnel as necessary for serious incidents or mutual aid requests.
  15. Report any deviations from assigned routes by police officers to the appropriate command staff.
  16. Ensure all emergency call lines are functioning properly and report any issues immediately.
  17. Document significant communications as per departmental guidelines and maintain accurate logs of daily activities.
  18. Explain departmental policies to the public regarding police services.
  19. Redirect calls for service to the appropriate jurisdiction when necessary.
  20. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED, with preference given to those holding a two- or four-year degree from an accredited institution.

Skills and Abilities: The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in operating complex communication equipment, prioritize emergency situations effectively, maintain composure under stress, and possess strong knowledge of public safety practices. Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a high-pressure environment are essential.
