Role Summary:

The Genealogy Services Librarian plays a crucial role in enhancing the library's offerings by providing exceptional assistance to patrons seeking genealogy and local history resources. This position requires a proactive approach to customer service, ensuring that all visitors feel welcomed and supported in their research endeavors.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Welcome patrons warmly and engage them in meaningful discussions about library resources and services, delivering outstanding customer service across all library locations.
  2. Communicate effectively with patrons about library offerings, policies, and procedures, utilizing creativity and problem-solving skills to enhance the overall customer experience.
  3. Assess patron needs through open-ended inquiries, offering tailored recommendations and expert guidance on genealogy and local history research.
  4. Conduct thorough research for patrons and assist in navigating genealogy databases and physical resources through both group and individual instruction.
  5. Support the onboarding of new staff members, fostering a collaborative environment and providing training as needed.
  6. Design, implement, and evaluate engaging genealogy programs and workshops, managing a departmental budget and ensuring a diverse range of offerings.
  7. Evaluate program effectiveness based on community engagement and feedback, making adjustments to better serve patron interests.
  8. Assist in the planning and execution of large-scale library events, demonstrating flexibility in scheduling to accommodate these initiatives.
  9. Manage online content and marketing materials, ensuring accurate communication of library events and services to the community.
  10. Maintain relationships with local organizations and schools to promote library resources and services.
  11. Review and assess library collections for relevance and community interest, making recommendations for new acquisitions.
  12. Oversee specialized activities within Adult Services, ensuring quality and consistency in service delivery.
  13. Create informative bibliographies and user guides to highlight library collections and programs.
  14. Participate in library committees as needed, contributing to collaborative projects and initiatives.
  15. Exhibit strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively while maintaining attention to detail.
  16. Engage with diverse audiences through presentations and outreach, representing the library in various public forums.
  17. Commit to ongoing professional development to stay informed about library trends and best practices.
  18. Ensure the safety and security of library spaces, adhering to established protocols and emergency procedures.
  19. Complete additional tasks as assigned to support library operations.

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent, with specialized training or education in a relevant field.
  2. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly to diverse audiences.
  3. Basic mathematical proficiency and problem-solving abilities.
  4. Intermediate computer skills, including familiarity with office software and library databases.
  5. Exceptional customer service skills, particularly in resolving challenging situations.

Additional Skills:

  1. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  2. Creativity in developing library services and programs that meet community needs.
  3. Knowledge of genealogy research methods and resources.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  5. Ability to manage multiple projects under pressure and meet deadlines.
  6. Multilingual abilities are a plus.

Work Environment:

  1. Ability to work in a dynamic environment with moderate noise levels and frequent interruptions.
  2. Occasional exposure to mechanical equipment within the library.
