What Environmental Health & Safety contributes to Cardinal Health
Environmental Health & Safety oversees initiatives aimed at recognizing and alleviating hazardous situations within both workplace and external settings. This role conducts routine evaluations, addresses incidents, investigates underlying causes, and implements training and corrective actions to avert future occurrences. Additionally, this function maintains relationships with regulatory bodies and community stakeholders.
Environmental Health & Safety formulates and executes strategies to identify and reduce hazardous conditions in the workplace and surrounding environments. This team investigates accidents and environmental issues, collaborating with engineers, management, and regulatory authorities to determine causes and prevent recurrence. They provide training on safety protocols, conduct compliance assessments, and nurture relationships with community members, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders affected by the organization’s environmental performance.
Job Summary
The EHS Advisor will report to the EHS Area Manager. This position is tasked with developing and implementing EHS solutions that support Cardinal Health assets, primarily in designated regions. These solutions aim to manage, mitigate, and where feasible, eliminate EHS risks to employees, facilities, products, and the communities in which the organization operates.
Responsibilities
- Assists in executing the global EHS strategy to minimize risks to personnel, property, community, information, and brand.
- Collaborates with operational leaders to create and implement site-specific annual EHS plans; standardizes EHS programs; ensures critical information is communicated; and applies best practices.
- Provides support and expertise for various events (e.g., regulatory inquiries, natural disasters, business continuity, significant incidents).
- Leads the management of operation-specific EHS hazard assessments and develops risk mitigation strategies.
- Partners with operational leaders to ensure adherence to company and regulatory standards.
- Analyzes key EHS metrics to assist operations in constructing and executing continuous improvement plans.
- Assists leaders in identifying budgetary requirements for risk reduction and compliance assurance.
- Ensures accurate reporting and communication of key performance metrics, including occupational injury/illness and environmental sustainability results.
- Develops and maintains facility profiles.
- Assists with responses to regulatory inquiries and reporting obligations.
- Participates in assessments and audits.
- Provides technical assistance and guidance in risk-related matters, including ergonomics, industrial hygiene, safety, environmental issues, incident investigation, business resiliency, and occupational health processes.
- Supports management teams in investigating, notifying, and managing cases of occupational injuries/illnesses. Aids in developing and implementing business resiliency plans.
- Assists operations in addressing property/casualty recommendations from third parties.
- Provides EHS leadership during business continuity scenarios.
- Educates and mentors management teams on their EHS responsibilities.
- Promotes a diverse workforce.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience preferred.
- Advanced degree and/or professional certification (CSP, CIH, CHMM, etc.) preferred.
- A minimum of four years of experience in a related field preferred.
- Understanding and experience with EHS Management Systems and/or ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 and their successful implementation.
- Strong knowledge of regulations and guidance from Federal and State OSHA and EPA, as well as workers' compensation requirements.
- Technical ability to collaborate and negotiate with government officials, consultants, and other third-party stakeholders.
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene regulations and monitoring requirements is a plus.
- Ability to travel approximately 10-20%.
