Job Description

Overview:

The Surgical Specimen Processing Technician plays a crucial role in the preparation and analysis of surgical specimens, ensuring compliance with established protocols and maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct both routine and specialized tasks related to the preparation of surgical specimens for histological examination, adhering to institutional policies and procedures.
  • Ensure accurate specimen accessioning and labeling, safeguarding the integrity of both the specimen and patient identification.
  • Provide detailed descriptions of gross anatomical characteristics of standard surgical specimens, meticulously noting all lesions, markings, and sutures.
  • Identify and escalate complex surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants for further evaluation.
  • Document measurements, weight, volume, and any notable findings as necessary.
  • Perform dissection of surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histological processing.
  • May receive training to execute basic histology tasks (e.g., embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining) if qualifications are met as per corporate guidelines.
  • Complete all relevant documentation associated with specimen processing.
  • Adhere to laboratory procedures relevant to job responsibilities.
  • Engage directly with pathologists regarding gross dissection and description tasks, particularly for specimen types requiring direct oversight.
  • Recognize and address issues that could negatively impact test performance or result reporting, promptly notifying supervisors as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards as mandated by corporate policies.
  • Maintain adherence to local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
  • Keep a clean and organized workspace to promote efficiency and safety.

Qualifications:

  • A.A., A.S., B.A. or B.S. degree or equivalent training and experience.
  • Preferred experience of 3 months to 1 year in histology and/or surgical gross examination.
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Must meet all corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR.
  • Shift/Time Zone: Shifts may vary from early morning hours.
