Position Overview:
The Surgical Technologist Certification Specialist (CST) plays a vital role in providing patient care to achieve defined patient outcomes and fulfill the facility's objectives under the guidance of the Registered Nurse. The CST executes responsibilities in alignment with the scope of practice as specified by the facility's position description and adheres to the standards set by the surgical technologist professional organization and certification board.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver organized and timely patient care on a daily basis.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse to implement educational plans for patients and their families as directed.
- Assist in the stocking, replenishment, and preparation of necessary supplies.
- Manage specimens in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
- Support the care, preparation, maintenance, and aftercare of both sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
- Respond to patient care needs during emergencies under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
- Participate in the cleaning, preparation, and sterilization of surgical instruments.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Operating Room supervisor or department charge nurse.
Core Competencies:
- Ability to correlate clinical data with patient care under the guidance of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
- Skill in setting priorities effectively.
- Capability to provide clear and concise direction to others, promoting efficiency throughout clinical areas.
- Strong communication skills with patients, families, colleagues, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
- Understanding of legal and policy limitations regarding individual practice.
Education & Experience:
- Graduate of an accredited Operating Room Technician Program.
- Previous experience as an Operating Room Technician is preferred.
- Current certification as a Surgical Technologist.
- Successful completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Course within 90 days of employment or possession of current BCLS certification.
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions:
- Physical Requirements: Good visual acuity and accurate color vision. Ability to lift and transfer patients exceeding 100 pounds, requiring a full range of body movement including pushing and pulling. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Proficient in reaching, grasping, and fine finger movements, as well as discerning temperature, texture, size, and shape. Ability to communicate effectively.
- Environmental Conditions: Work is performed indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Patient care settings may involve exposure to unpleasant odors, blood and body fluids, infectious diseases, and chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate may occur.
