Role Summary:

The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) plays a vital role in assisting surgeons during surgical and invasive procedures. This position ensures that the operating room is fully prepared, maintains the inventory of surgical instruments and supplies, and is responsible for the cleaning and sterilization of all surgical tools. Participation in departmental meetings and quality improvement initiatives is also expected.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage professionally with patients and their families, providing clear explanations and reassurance as needed.
  • Customize procedures to accommodate the diverse needs of patients, considering age, gender, culture, race, and social background.
  • Deliver comprehensive patient care in a manner that prioritizes safety and minimizes the risk of medical errors.
  • Prepare the surgical environment promptly with all necessary instruments, sutures, and supplies for each procedure.
  • Exhibit proficiency in specimen care and ensure accurate handling at all times.
  • Assist in the positioning, preparation, and draping of patients for surgical interventions.
  • Conduct thorough counts of instruments, sponges, and needles, adhering to protocols for discrepancies.
  • Maintain sterile techniques during procedures and ensure an organized instrument table.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients and colleagues, following established policies and procedures.
  • Verify the functionality of all required equipment and instruments before each procedure.
  • Communicate any patient discomfort to the appropriate licensed personnel.
  • Prepare for procedures in a timely manner, following directions from the circulating nurse or nurse manager.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon during the surgical phase.
  • Clean and prepare operating rooms between procedures, restocking supplies as necessary.
  • Take responsibility for the care and processing of instruments during the intraoperative and postoperative phases.
  • Adhere to sterilization protocols and understand the importance of monitoring procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members to maintain the necessary equipment and supplies for surgical operations.
  • Complete sterilization documentation within the designated shift, meeting current standards.
  • Foster effective communication and a positive working relationship with colleagues for the benefit of patients.
  • Make informed decisions based on knowledge and judgment within the CST's scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate initiative and maintain a consistent level of productivity.
  • Fulfill annual education requirements and maintain necessary licensure and certifications.
  • Comply with regulatory standards and report to work punctually.
  • Complete required compliance training as mandated by law.
  • Uphold HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Travel to various clinics as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Completion of an accredited surgical technology program and possession of CST certification are mandatory. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with relevant experience or training.
