Job Summary

DC SAFE is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Shelter Advocate to join our team. As a key member of our crisis intervention team, you will provide direct services to victims of domestic violence, ensuring their safety and self-determination.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess clients for lethality and develop advocacy plans to ensure their safety.
  • Provide crisis intervention resources and facilitate access to Continuum Partners.
  • Guide clients through the civil and criminal justice process, prioritizing their immediate safety and self-determination.
  • Offer information and assistance on navigating the Civil Justice System, including evidentiary requirements and victim's rights.
  • Provide information and assistance on navigating the Criminal Justice System, including contact with the USAO screener and victim witness rights.
  • Collaborate with MPD, USAO, and CSOSA to ensure client safety and provide referrals for community resources.
  • Advocate for clients by providing general legal/systems information and assisting with letters and complaints.
  • Facilitate clients' access to DC SAFE Space Shelter and assist with Crime Victims Compensation applications.
Shelter Advocate Responsibilities
  • Provide primary coverage in the DC SAFE shelter, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for clients.
  • Offer support, advocacy, and safety planning to shelter clients during their stay.
  • Collaborate with support staff to ensure the shelter runs smoothly, including safety checks and building maintenance.
  • Provide information, referrals, and letters of recommendation to increase clients' access to social service programs.
  • Assist with client intakes and exits, ensuring quality client interaction.
  • Implement and enforce shelter rules, promoting a safe and respectful environment.
Requirements
  • 1-2 years of experience in crisis intervention work.
  • Mandatory 40-hour advocacy training completed is preferred.
  • Experience with domestic violence issues and DC social service resources.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow protocol and procedures.
  • Experience working with law enforcement is preferred.
  • Comfortable working with diverse populations.
  • Experience with the criminal and civil legal system is preferred.
  • Must successfully pass background and drug tests.
  • Bilingual applicants are preferred.
