Responsibilities:


The Occupational Safety and Industrial Hygiene Department is looking for an Underground Senior Safety Specialist with a keen eye for detail to work at the Nevada National Security site underground.

Key Responsibilities


Provide safety support within the MSTS Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene (OS&IH) Division.


Assist with construction projects, including UCEP, waterline upgrades, ASD, MSTS, and subcontract construction activities, along with other assigned duties.


Support the underground Work Planning Center, conduct site walkdowns and work package reviews, and oversee work performance, including off-shift and non-standard work shifts as necessary.

Administer and enforce the Occupational Safety program for underground operations, covering construction, maintenance, and experimentation activities.

Develop, implement, and manage strategies for accident prevention in close collaboration with management and supervisory personnel.

Advise company personnel, DOE, and user agencies on occupational safety matters, safety codes, and accident prevention programs.


Plan and coordinate the creation and implementation of training sessions and individual course studies for field supervisors, and may lead these sessions.

Review plans and specifications for construction and equipment operations to ensure all safety precautions are integrated.

Inspect work sites to identify potential or existing hazards and investigate safety code violations.

Conduct accident investigations, including vehicle-related incidents, to ascertain relevant causes.

Recommend modifications to equipment and processes to rectify unsafe conditions.

Enforce occupational safety regulations and prohibit work in unsafe conditions.

Prepare and disseminate safety reports, bulletins, codes, and studies.

Provide resources and interpretations for all applicable occupational safety codes, standards, and technical developments.

Develop and manage accident and statistical reporting systems and documentation procedures.

Perform additional duties as assigned by Management.

Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in occupational safety or a related field, or equivalent training and experience, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant occupational safety experience.

Must be capable of working in underground environments and tunnels without experiencing claustrophobia.

Thorough knowledge of safety regulations is essential, along with the ability to stay updated on changes.


Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to promote accident prevention, conduct field and accident investigations, and coordinate the development and implementation of new or revised safety procedures and techniques.


Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy are required in drafting technical documents and ensuring compliance with all company policies and procedures.


Able to exercise independent judgment, creativity, initiative, and the ability to apply knowledge and experience to resolve issues and create technical correspondence and reports, achieving goals where established procedures may not be specific.

Highly organized with the ability to prioritize and schedule multiple activities within the organizational unit.


Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with diverse individuals in a tactful, professional, and effective manner while maintaining confidentiality.

Ability to remember and recall extensive policies, procedures, terminology, schedules, personnel, and other details.

Able to manage the pressure of handling multiple tasks, complaints, frequent interruptions, and time constraints.


The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site.

The U1a Complex is situated in the forward areas of the NNSS.

Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).

A pre-placement physical examination, including a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

A valid driver's license is required.


MSTS is mandated by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review, which includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.

Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matters if the duties of the position necessitate a DOE security clearance.

Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct, or other indicators of untrustworthiness can lead to a clearance denial or termination by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform assigned duties and subsequent termination of employment.

Additionally, applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and being at least 18 years of age. Reference, "Personnel Security". If you hold multiple citizenships (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be affected.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level).

Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drugs, as defined in, "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted.

The selected applicant will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matters.

Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference, "Counterintelligence Evaluation Program."
