POSITION SUMMARY:
The Essential Skills Instructor will be under the supervision of the Multi-Site Academic Director and will deliver instruction in areas such as business communication, introductory computer skills, public speaking, and customer service, all conducted in a virtual environment. The curriculum is well-established, and the instructor will have the opportunity to modify and enhance it to align with the requirements of a new program launch. The focus in the virtual classroom is on experiential learning; students will acquire essential competencies needed for careers in Application Development through immersive role-plays, practice, and real-world applications, as facilitated by the instructor.
Year Up's operational model is built on the principles of high expectations coupled with substantial support. Instructors dedicate significant time to mentoring students in professional conduct, fostering their self-confidence, and guiding them in making decisions that will aid them in achieving their aspirations. Instructors are integral members of the centralized academic team, expected to collaborate on interdisciplinary initiatives and mentor less experienced instructors. You will engage with student participants across diverse geographical markets, connecting with young adults virtually as they prepare for internships with various corporate partners.
To excel in this role, you should possess a passion for education, a keen interest in teaching, and a solid understanding of coding (particularly Java and/or Front-end development), technology, and its relevance in the corporate sector. You should be detail-oriented, enjoy a collaborative and supportive role within a team, and feel comfortable acting as a mentor to our young adults.
In alignment with Year Up's values, the Instructor will also have the chance to engage with students on an individual basis, serving as a group facilitator and advocate, contributing to the creation of a positive educational atmosphere.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructional Duties
Teach courses in business communication, introductory computer skills, public speaking, and customer service to approximately 40 students per class, utilizing a curriculum that corresponds with college-level standards. Develop and deliver high-quality, student-centered, project-based classes daily, ensuring students are engaged, challenged, and enjoying the learning experience. Provide guidance for self-directed learning and offer one-on-one tutoring outside of class hours. Effectively manage the classroom in accordance with Year Up's guidelines and behavior-modification strategies. Assist students in enhancing their programming skills, including Java and Frontend Development. Identify essential competencies for instruction to satisfy both college-level course criteria and industry workplace demands. Refine assessment tools to evaluate the learning and progress of Year Up students, ensuring their successful transition to corporate internships; utilize these tools for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of Year Up's effectiveness. Ensure that students' communication skills and professional competencies align with the expectations of internship and college partners. Coordinate efforts within the academic team, including collaboration on interdisciplinary projects. Perform additional duties as assigned.Academic Team Contributions
Manage assignment grading and input grades into the online system. Participate in ongoing curriculum planning meetings with the academic team. Attend and engage in weekly Academic Team Meetings and periodic Professional Development workshops and training sessions. Serve as a mentor for a select group of current students. Facilitate and sometimes lead weekly group sessions with students. Participate in staff meetings and training activities.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree preferred. 1-3 years of experience in an educational role required. Familiarity with eLearning, computer-enhanced teaching, and blended learning methodologies preferred. At least 1 year of experience teaching or working with youth preferred. Foundational knowledge in Application Development and Software Development Fundamentals. Interest in implementing innovative teaching methodologies and creating an interactive learning environment. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience managing projects with exceptional attention to detail. Excellent communication abilities, strong teamwork skills, and a mature interpersonal style with the capacity to engage with a diverse range of individuals. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure. A desire to collaborate and contribute to the learning team, with experience in curriculum and lesson planning. Experience in student assessment and a talent for continuously evaluating the curriculum to identify effective practices and areas for improvement. Proficiency with various Learning Management Systems (e.g., Schoology, Moodle, Sakai) and virtual teaching tools (e.g., Second Life, Adobe Connect) preferred.
