The Role

Moderna is expanding its presence in Seattle to further its mission of delivering the greatest possible impact to people through mRNA medicines. Our new technology hub in Seattle will focus on software product development for our Commercial, Data & Machine Learning, Cloud Infrastructure, Security, and Engineering Excellence (dev tools) products and platforms.

Our Cloud and Digital Infrastructure (CDI) organization is at the core of transforming Moderna's enterprise use of the Cloud and on-premises compute. Through Moderna Mindsets, and a passion to change the future of medicine, CDI focuses on removing viscosity and enabling secure and scalable foundations for Moderna's broad range of internal customers.

We are seeking an experienced Site Reliability Engineer who brings robust technical expertise and a background in supporting digital infrastructure, both on-premises and in the cloud, with a development and operational focus (DevOps). This individual believes in automation but also is willing to accelerate hands-on to ensure customers are getting what they need. A proven partner that can effectively communicate and collaborate with peer engineers of all types as well as business stakeholders. You proactively look to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support legacy or new technology solutions to improve the infrastructure while having a keen eye on optimizing for stability and cost.

A successful candidate will have an established track record with ample tenacity and experience in a fast-paced, metrics-driven environment. They will be comfortable executing in a rapidly and ever-changing environment, keeping quality and safety high without losing a sense of urgency. Experienced in staying composed with grace and resilience under pressure and the ability to collaborate with peers and also mentor junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead team projects, actively mentor and develop team members, and contribute to team architecture. Your technology solutions will significantly enhance resilience, performance, and business value within the organization.
  • Impact team goals, technical strategies, dependencies, resilience, and performance. You will be a key contributor to defining not only what we work on but why we should work on it.
  • Troubleshoot complex problems, decompose difficult challenges into manageable work.
  • Define and apply engineering, testing, and operational excellence standards to your team and the organization.
  • Support customers through the participation of regular on-call related duties as well as executing planned changes (change requests) to maintain the environment.
  • Partner cross-organizations to drive improvements into the supportability and maintainability of the platform(s) and system(s), reducing viscosity for customers and engineers.
Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technology or scientific field OR 5 years of equivalent professional experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 4+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language, such as Python, Ruby, PowerShell, etc.
  • 6+ years of job-related experience in a non-internship role.
  • 2+ years of experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems.
  • Experience with modern full-stack software applications both built or off the shelf.
  • Experience documenting technical systems, user workflows, and user requirements.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with traditional IT infrastructure as well as the Cloud, preferably AWS.
  • Experience leading the design, build, and deployment of complex and performant (reliable and scalable) software/system solutions in a production environment.
  • Experience taking a leading role in building complex software or computing infrastructure that has been successfully delivered to customers.
  • Knowledge of and advocacy of engineer practices and patterns for the full life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and production operations.
  • Evidence of Moderna Mindset: We behave like owners. The solutions we're building go beyond any job description.
  • Evidence of Moderna Mindset: We Act with dynamic range, driving strategy and execution at the same time at every step.
  • Evidence of Moderna Mindset: We Prioritize the platform over any single solution.
  • Experience in a regulated environment.
  • A desire to make an impact as part of a high-growth, transformational company that is Bold, Relentless, Curious, and Collaborative.
  • Self-directed and self-motivated; excellent communicator and collaborator.
