Junior Radiation Safety Specialist
The Junior Radiation Safety Specialist is an entry-level position that supports the TerraPower Radiation Safety Officer and carries out the daily operations of the Radiation Safety Program.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage various aspects of the Radiation Safety Program, including dosimetry, waste management, emissions control, bioassay, radiation-generating equipment, air sampling, shipping, and training.
- Evaluate the application of radiological instrumentation.
- Collaborate with the RSO to establish dose limits and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) controls.
- Apply principles and practices of health physics effectively.
- Analyze qualitative and quantitative data.
- Assess radiation and radioactive material hazards with professional judgment.
- Conduct contamination and exposure rate surveys.
- Perform routine inspections of laboratory and radiological conditions.
- Deploy and retrieve airborne monitoring equipment and filters.
- Provide operational radiation safety support and serve as a contact point for TerraPower radiation workers.
- Ensure compliance of TerraPower's radiological activities with established policies.
- Offer daily operational and laboratory support to maintain functional instruments and equipment necessary for TerraPower operations.
- Review, survey, and manage shipments of Class 7 Radioactive Material, including conducting receipt inspections.
- Acquire, maintain, and calibrate radiological instruments.
- Assist in managing inventory and supplies of health physics materials and equipment.
- Direct and perform decontamination procedures as needed.
- Communicate radiation protection requirements effectively to personnel.
- Provide radiation safety and instrumentation training to TerraPower radiation workers.
- Review, update, and follow standard operating procedures.
- Observe work practices to ensure ALARA principles are implemented.
- Execute additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the TerraPower Radiation Safety Officer.
- A B.S. degree in Radiation Protection, Radiological/Health Science, or a related technical field is preferred. Alternatively, a high school diploma with 8 years of experience in a health physics technician role, or an associate degree with 4 years of experience in a health physics technician role, or Navy ELT veteran status with an additional 4 years of experience in a health physics technician role, or equivalent training and experience.
- NRRPT certification is advantageous.
- Experience in planning, supervising, and reviewing radiological work in radiation and contamination areas is preferred.
- Proficiency in using radiation detection instruments such as swipe counters, ion chambers, GM meters, gamma counters, and gamma spectroscopy systems.
- Experience in conducting radiation contamination and exposure rate surveys.
- Ability to perform physical tasks with and without respiratory protection.
- Capability to wear PPE, personal dosimeters, and respirators.
- Willingness to work a modified schedule and overtime as required by workload and project timelines.
- The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of trust and integrity, communicate transparently, and exhibit respect while fostering teamwork.
- Military experience is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees, management, and regulatory bodies as necessary.
- Must be adaptable and able to quickly adjust to new or changing projects/tasks and schedules.
- Ability to work independently, showing self-motivation and initiative is preferred.

- Special Senses: Visual and auditory focused work, with the ability to perform the role while wearing personal protective equipment.
- Work Conditions: Laboratory, warehouse, stairs, typing/keyboard, standard and/or sitting working environment exceeding 8 hours per day.
- Working with chemical and radiological hazards on benchtops, in fume hoods, glove boxes, and hot cells.
- Alternative schedules, weekend work, shift work, and overnight work may be required.

Job DetailsSalary Range Level 9:
$95,415 - $143,122
*Typically, our employee salaries are within the mid-point of the posted salary bands. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. This range is specific to Washington State.
