The Motor Carrier Safety Division collaborates with the Commercial Vehicle Division to ensure the safe transit of commercial vehicles across state highways through both educational initiatives and enforcement actions. The WSP plays a crucial role in upholding commercial motor vehicle regulations concerning size, weight, load, and safety standards on all Interstate and State Routes. These enforcement activities are integral to the agency's mission of minimizing serious injuries and fatalities involving commercial vehicles.

Within the Motor Carrier Safety Division, this mission is primarily executed at five Ports of Entry, strategically staffed to optimize interactions with commercial vehicles entering Washington State.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforcing specific CFRs, RCWs, and WACs to enhance roadway safety through both mobile patrols and the management of fixed scale facilities.
  • Acting as a lead worker, overseeing scheduling, training, and field supervision.
  • Providing expert technical guidance to transportation carriers, evaluating records and documents to ensure compliance with relevant CFRs, RCWs, and WACs concerning load and equipment safety, driver qualifications, hazardous materials transport, collision protocols, drug and alcohol testing, driver training standards, insurance, authority, and hours of service.
  • Assigning and organizing staff/officers for specific duties and shifts to maintain a robust Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) program.
  • Serving as the Field Training Officer (FTO) for the detachment, managing on-the-job training requirements for new personnel, and delivering specialized training to colleagues as directed by the supervisor.
  • Reviewing reports submitted by other commercial vehicle personnel and compiling findings for supervisor review.
  • Conducting thorough inspections of commercial vehicle equipment through detailed safety assessments to ensure legal compliance.
  • Mentoring subordinates by monitoring their work habits and providing necessary guidance to cultivate future leaders within the agency.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year of experience as a current/permanent CVEO 1.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) industry.
  • Ability to meet productivity standards, deadlines, and work schedules.
  • Confidence in making independent decisions.
  • Capability to work autonomously with minimal oversight.
  • Effective communication skills, particularly in verbal interactions.
