Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Accountant II to join our team at Fairfax County (VA). As a key member of our financial team, you will be responsible for overseeing the financial accounting associated with banking general ledgers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and analyze bank transactions on a daily basis to ensure proper accounting treatment and recording of financial transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Advises county agencies on accounting and record keeping policies and procedures, interpreting and applying policy to various county functions.
  • Prepares unclaimed property filings with each state, ensuring that all reporting deadlines are met.
  • Skilledly utilizes the county's automated financial system, various Microsoft Office Suite applications (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook Mail & Calendar), and online banking applications in the performance of daily work.
  • Assists in the development and management of enhancements and changes to the financial system and in the coordination of external data.
  • Assists the independent auditors by preparing requested analyses and work papers, performing related tasks and special projects as necessary.
  • Directly supervises staff, providing regular feedback and coaching on job performance, including performance evaluation of subordinate.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting, or a bachelor's degree in business administration or related field that has been supplemented by at least 18 credit hours of intermediate level accounting or higher.
  • Two years of professional accounting experience, including one year of experience working with automated accounting systems.
  • CPA certification, or a master's degree in an appropriate field, may be substituted for one year of required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience processing and analyzing complex financial transactions.
  • Experience interpreting and applying policies and regulations.
  • Experience with automated financial systems and skilled use of databases and applications.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook Mail & Calendar.
  • CPA desirable.
  • Demonstrated research skills with government report filings.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, prioritize multiple tasks, and work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Acceptance of responsibility and taking initiative to ensure accomplishment of the core missions.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to address a wide audience.
